Occasional Spurs Odyssey columnist Anton Lang is in despair after the West Ham result.
So, beaten once again by a struggling, bottom of the table team with only
their second home victory of the season.
Before the match Hoddle said that he felt Roeder was a great manager and
West Ham would avoid the drop. At our expense? Too bloody right! Is he
single-handedly looking to help an old chum with a leg up? If this were in
the Italian league where corruption is rife one might even suggest that this
could be the case and who knows, maybe in years to come the game might even
be investigated by the FA. Well okay, I am not seriously suggesting that
folks but conspiracy theorists among the footballing fraternity may harbour
this suspicion - after all, didn't Hoddle say that he thought Ipswich were
too good to go down last season?
Okay, so it's only one loss and a draw and there are still nine games yet to
play but next weekend we have another enforced break due to the FA cup and
as breaks go, the holiday spirit seems to remain with us long after the
return. Once again, so many players looked jaded, un-interested and plainly
were not yet ready for this match. Only the youngest members of the team
looked as if they had something to play for and both could be playing for
different teams next year if ENIC get their way. Etherington and Davies both
challenged for their places but Hoddle seems fit to bypass the talent of
Ethers and Davies only gets a game if he can play as the utility player
anywhere on the park. Etherington may have to drop down a league for first
team football (a shocking waste of a talent) and Davies could be plucked
from us by Manure to replace Giggs or someone of the like.
So then, who do we have left? Anderton? (hooray) looks like he could be off
too. Freund? Nah, on his way back to the Bundesleague due to... wait for
it... clash of personality with Hoddle. Sheringham? Is he going to get his
contract? Unlikely! Poyet? At his age he is well past his best and is even
less likely to be on the first team sheet next year. So next year we should
have a squad of players that have even less talent than this lot today.
Iverson, Perry, Acimov, Bunjecevic, Toda, Doherty...?
Now here is where the real rant begins: What the hell are ENIC going to do
about it? Bail out, that's what. Yes, when they get the money from the
mystery bidder they will be out of the door quicker than it takes her
majesty to ignore another honours list featuring Bill Nicholson. And Hoddle,
well as the Clash would have it - Should he stay or should he go? At the
moment, there is a hung jury but the more we hear about this player and that
player falling out with his dishonesty or weakness of will (whichever way
you choose to see it).
Yes, I am miffed about the recent results. Not because of a loss but because
it is against bottom of the table opposition and we are meant to be fighting
for a place in Europe. The derision from the neighbouring fans is hard to
swallow at the best of times but when they are right - we do delude
ourselves about being a force to reckon with - at galls me even further. At
this rate we may even find ourselves in a worse position than last season as
the wheels of the wagon once more shake violently and proceed to the
inevitable departing from the chassis.
Where did it all go wrong? Well here is the irony part that you have been
waiting for. News from abroad: Rebrov scores in second minute as new Turkish
team take the honours. News closer to home: Ferdinand scores against his old
club. West Ham take only second victory at home. Spurs show evidence that
January window was a must for a striker. Freund accuses Hoddle of lying now.
No contracts for Spurs players. Shares in ENIC rocket and ENIC could be off
after mystery buyer tables offer. Clueless Hoddle replaces pseudo striker
with pseudo defender.
So our two strikers that were released score and last week Clemence managed
to do something too. It's Worthington cup weekend and we are no further
forward this year than we were at this time last year, except that this year
we are not even in contention for any trophies either. Hoddle once more
turns his back on the Intertoto (looks like our last hope for Euro
qualification on Monday and today's form) and we hear once again that Hoddle
feels the best chance of Euro qualification is not through any back door
route but in good hard graft. Where from and from whom does he see this
graft being displayed?
Oh look, I give in.Yes, I feel dismayed. I have tried to show some patience
with Hoddle and ENIC but now I feel it is time one of them (or both) should
go as it is long overdue that we should be a major player in the Premier
league and under the present regime I cannot see anything new occurring. It
isn't a player culling that we should have, it is a management culling from
the very top downwards.
Some of you will no doubt accuse me of not getting behind the team but I say
that I am behind THFC and always have been but season after season it is not
THFC who have been lacking but various managers and boards that have ripped
the very heart out of the fans and the once great club that we were.
ENIC are the curse of Alan Sugar and I still feel he set up their taking
over as revenge for the way the fans treated him. They have shown no
interest in resurrecting THFC and their puppet manager just seems to bury
his head in the sand when things go wrong for him.
