Keith Palmer is someone I count as a "Spurs Pal" and is known to many of you as an occasional columnist on The Spurs Web, and with no hesitation whatsoever, I can recommend this book which is on sale now at The Official Club shop and other good retailers (See the advert here)
The book is printed on very high quality glossy paper, and gives an insight into this club of ours that we love so much from several angles not exposed before in print. I'll let Keith (below) tell you more, but I've had a glimpse and I very much enjoyed what I saw, particularly from Eddie Bailey and Phil Beal. Eddie was of course Bill Nicholson's right hand man for so many years, whilst Phil was one of my favourite Spurs players, who I felt was under-rated by the public at large. The book has been compiled from interviews conducted over the last two or three years, and it was particularly poignant to find out that Phil Beal played alongside George Best in the United States after his career in this country.
Spurs Odyssey expects to carry a competition in the next week or two for copies of this excellent publication, but you may like to know that the author and several of his subjects will be signing copies at the club shop tomorrow (Saturday 3rd December, before the Sunderland game)
White Hart Lane Legends – Volume one
Every sport, every club, every one of us has a history, yet few provoke such excited interest as the enigmatic Tottenham Hotspur.
Some of the greatest players to have graced a pitch have worn our colours, yet, in a world obsessed with instant gratification, it’s so easy to forget the past, even one as illustrious as the famous ‘men in white’.
In reality, the stories of our heroes come to us third hand, or from the pen of impassive journalists detailed to fill daily copy - and some merely on the wings of hearsay and myth. By way of balance, White Hart Legends - Volume One was compiled by a fan – one who fulfilled his boyhood dream by going behind the scenes, meeting those childhood icons, and hearing the secrets of the changing room and team coach, while simultaneously laying a lifetime of niggling questions to rest.
Read honest appraisals of the infamous Jennings-Burkinshaw issue from both men and how it eventually favoured the red side of ‘The Great Divide.’ Discover the truth behind the successful Nicholson-Baily duo, and re-live the ‘Double’, the cup wins and the infamous Tottenham-Wimbledon saga that peppered the eighties; and all topped off by Steve Perryman’s highly personal view of the game and his beloved Spurs.
This book is more than just a collection of interviews. It brings you the thoughts and aspirations of those that thrilled and entertained us - the men who lit up a half century of Tottenham folklore, men like; Cliff Jones, Eddy Baily, Graham Roberts, Phil Beal, Ron Henry, Pat Jennings, Tommy Harmer, Gary Stevens, Keith Burkinshaw… and a fan. Yes, a fan! Unconventional I know, but if you didn’t know Morris Keston before, you’ll certainly recognize him now. A true blue Spur, who has travelled the world on a sixty-year plus journey; a football story as compelling as any ever heard.
So you’ve heard the whispered rumour from the pub, finally, it’s time for the horse’s mouth to bring some reality. Via White Hart Legends - Volume One you too will enter that locker room, ride on that coach, and share the stories of the careers that made our history. In other words, this is the truth - first hand. This is a book for any true fan tired of mere facts and figures – these are real stories from the mouths of real Tottenham heroes.
