Teemu Tainio celebrates his first Spurs goal with Robbie Keane, in the corresponding game last year. The business end of the season has started, and after the FA Cup excitement of last week, we get back to Premiership action. The second half of the League season started on Boxing Day, but we face a quick return match against Newcastle, who we faced on the Saturday before Christmas. The last time the fixture list played this particular trick on us was 4 years ago in December and January of 2002-3.

On that occasion, we lost 2-1 on December 29th at St. James' Park, and only scored thanks to an own goal by Dabizas. In the home match, we also lost, to a 90th minute winner from Jermaine Jenas, who will have to sit out this game, due to his ongoing recovery from injury. Jenas is getting close to fitness, but will not be quite ready for this game.

Both teams have to bear in mind unwanted FA Cup replays next week. The "Toon" have to face Steve Bruce's Birmingham, whilst we of course have to beat back the horde from Cardiff - and I am not referring only to the team from South Wales!

Newcastle still top the Premiership injury list, with Sibierski, Ramage, Babayaro, N'Zogbia, Bramble, Harper, Duff, Moore, Bernard, Carr, Ameobi and Owen listed on Wednesday's Physio Room table. Sibierski, Babayaro, Bramble, Harper and Duff may yet be mentioned amongst Glenn Roeder's squad. It has to be said that Newcastle's recent form has been remarkable, considering the hardships they have had to face. Perhaps because of the enforced absences, Roeder has learnt that his young defenders have more potential than he thought.

With that 3-1 win against us last month, Newcastle crept ahead of us in our Premiership head to head record, but we still have the superior overall League record. Newcastle have not actually won a game since we met three weeks ago, but then Spurs have only won once in that time, on Boxing Day against Villa.

In last season's corresponding game, played on New Year's Eve, Spurs won 2-0, with Teemu Tainio scoring his first Spurs goal, and Mido adding to that in the second half. Rumours abound at any transfer window period, but one of the latest is that Mido has fallen out with Martin Jol. Whatever the case, his form has slipped, and with Robbie Keane fit again, the Egyptian will do well to make the bench. Tainio is likely to feature for Spurs, but he surely needs to imrpove his influence upon the game to hold onto the place once Jenas is fit.

Another of those current rumours has Newcastle's N'Zogbia coming to Spurs (injured at present!) with Davenport going the other way. Such a move seems unlikely with Ledley King not yet fit, and Davenport next in the defensive pecking order. Indeed, I have been impressed with Calum's contribution to Spurs'32 game season (and counting!), and much as I like N'Zogbia, I would prefer Davenport to stay, thanks very much.

After 23 games last year, Newcastle were 14th with 26 points, and Spurs were 4th, with 41. Funnily enough, The "Magpies" are in the same position with the same points tally at the moment. I don't see that improving this week, and will take Spurs to seal the three points by two clear goals. The likely presence of Aaron Lennon will help the Spurs cause no end!
