Be ruthless, Spurs!

Mark Hughes' Fulham come to White Hart Lane for their fourth consecutive festive meeting. In the last three seasons, the sides have met on Boxing Day. The last two such meetings ended 0-0, and in 2007, Spurs ran out 5-1 victors. Fulham will be seeking to repeat their achievment of an away win at Stoke on Tuesday, but they haven't won at White Hart Lane since August 2003. Fulham's win at Stoke was their first Premier League win in 9 games and only their third league win of the season.

Fulham's problem has not so much been defeats, but the fact they have drawn so many games. They drew 6 of their first seven games, and were in fact the longest running unbeaten Premier League side this season, apart from the still unbeaten Manchester United. Fulham's only wins have been at home to Wolves and Wigan, and now this much-needed win at The Britannia Stadium. There is no doubt that Fulham have sorely missed former Spurs' striker Bobby Zamora, who suffered a broken leg against Wolves in September. Bobby is in the early stages of his return to playing action, and is still 5 weeks away from playing. They are still waiting for ex-gooner Philippe Senderos to make his debut, as he suffered serious injury to his calf/shin in the World Cup last summer, when playing for Switzerland.

Spurs hero Gareth Bale has good reason to remember and love playing against Fulham. On 1st September, 2007 in only his second game for Spurs, Gareth played on the left side of midfield and scored Spurs' third goal in a 3-3 draw. Spurs had been 3-1 up, but failed to hold onto the advantage. Bale had made his debut at Old Trafford the previous week, and was to enjoy a successful run in the side before suffering the injury that led to a set-back in his career.

Then, last January, against Fulham, Gareth started and finally laid to rest that 23 game hoodoo of not having started in a Premier League game won by Tottenham. Spurs won 2-0 with goals from Crouch, and David Bentley, getting a rare start, in a game where Gareth played at left back, due to Benoit Assou-Ekotto's injury. Until the FA Cup game against Peterborough, Gareth had been struggling to re-establish himself in the first team, but since the Hull game of 16th January, Gareth has played the full 90 minutes of every Premier League game played by Spurs, and scored 9 goals in those games. he has in the space of the last year become one of the most feared players in the Premier League.

Spurs won only their second Premier League game at Craven Cottage this season in a game which included some controversy.Kamara gave the home side a 30th minute lead, before Pavlyuchenko equalised with an easy finish, after Van der Vaart's chipped shot had rebounded off the bar. I actually missed this goal as I had my head in my hands, convinced that VDV had hit the ball over the bar! The controversy came with the winner scored by Tom Huddlestone, when William Gallas stood in an offside position. The referee, Mike Dean, allowed the goal, consulted his linesman, and decided the goal should stand. Obviously Fulham connections were not at all pleased! Fulham lost their unbeaten record in this, their eighth game.

Spurs are established in the top five now, 4 points ahead of Bolton. They can go ahead of Chelsea again with a win, and hope that Aston Villa can take something from Stamford Bridge. While Spurs are at Everton next Wednesday, Chelsea are at Molineux. It's going to be tough to keep our opponents at bay, but Arsenal play Man City next Wednesday too, so there is ground to be gained, if Spurs can keep their momentum going.

The priority though is to win one game at a time. Despite the enforced absence of Defoe and Kaboul, for their red card offences, Spurs have the strength in depth to do a job on "The Cottagers", with Bale to the fore. I want Spurs to be ruthless, but fair. I'll take them to win 3-0! Let's make it a Happy New Year!
