Phew! What a corker!

The Premier League is back! How welcome those words are every year, and what a game we have here to kick off the new season at 12.45 for those eager fans present and for Sky viewers! We couldn't wish for a better game really, as this is of course a re-run of the "play-off" game, won by Spurs in May that gave us and not City access to the Champions League qualifier next week. City as a club, and their fans were absolutely gutted to fail in their quest for the top four, and face a Europa League qualifier next Thursday against Romanian side FC Timisoara, whilst Spurs have the best of draws against Young Boys of Bern(e) with every chance of making it to the precious group stages.

Already, as has been well documented, City have splashed out another £100 million or so, and will be determined to have Champions League football next year. The transfers of Yaya Toure, David Silva, Aleksandar Kolarov and Jerome Boateng have already been secured, and as I write the signings of James Milner from Aston Villa, and the controversial figure of striker Mario Balotelli are getting closer and closer!

In the process of re-structuring their side though, manager Roberto Mancini has succeeded in deflating the egos and morale of more than one current player. Stephen Ireland was once the darling of City fans, but may be on his way out. Craig Bellamy is desperate for a way out, having been left out of Mancini's squad of 25, and may yet come to Spurs. Wayne Bridge can't be too happy as Kolarov is surely going to be first choice left back, and even Shay Given has been expressing concern about perhaps playing second fiddle to Joe Hart, back from his successful loan at Birmingham.

It could just be the best time for Spurs to play City, before they perhaps settle as a team, rather than just be the latest version of football's "Harlem Globetrotters".

Gareth Bale has been declared fit after some pre-season bruising, whilst Roman Pavlyuchenko will not make this game due to a hamstring injury. As for City, with all the activity surrounding signings, it's almost anyone's guess as to who will play. Trying to plan for this match in the wake of this week's International friendlies must have been a nightmare, but we might be grateful for the fact that wilson Palacios has not had to travel, and therefore should be abale to thwart the runs and threats from Yaya Toure, who will surely make his official City debut, along with one or more others!

10 years ago in what was a relegation season for Manchester City, the two teams played out a 0-0 on September 23rd, 2000.

50 years ago in the Spurs Double season City were the first team to take a point of Spurs after their record breaking opening run of 11 games being won.

Despite all the hype about City and their millions, I stand by my point regarding their need to gel as a team, and really fancy Spurs to get off to a winning start, with a score of 2-1. Hopefully there will be a chance for Giovani Dos Santos to play and shine, as his pre-season and World Cup form has been quite a relevation, making him a great asset to the Spurs squad.
