No holiday for Spurs

Most visitors to Cyprus at this time of the year are summer holiday makers, enjoying the 30 degree plus temperatures, but even though this game will be played in Larnaca, hosts AEL Limassol have every intention of making this a tough game in the final qualifying round of the Europa League.

AEL (stands for Athlitiki Enosis Lemessou)finished runners-up in their league last season, only on goal difference. That gained them entry to the third qualifying round of the Chamions League where they beat Andre Villas-Boas's Zenit St. Petersburg 1-0 in their home leg, but lost 3-1 in Russia. AEL had to play 70 minutes of that away leg with only 10 men, as the Brazilian attacking player Danielzinho was sent off for a second bookable offence. he, presumably, will have to sit out tonight's game.

As I so often discover when looking at the squads of our European opponents, AEL have several Brazilians. There are four in total, but none with whom you will be familiar. Their biggest goal-scorer last season was the Portuguese Monteiro, but he has gone home this year. The squad is certainly multi-national, containing five Cypriots.

The only other time we have played in a competitive game against a team from Cyprus was seven years ago, when Martin Jol's Spurs had finished "best of the rest" for the second successive season, thus qualifying for the old UEFA Cup. That team was Anorthosis Famagusta, who we beat 6-1 at home, before getting a 1-1 draw in the away match, also played in Larnaca.

Four current Spurs players featured in the games against Anorthosis. They were Younes Kaboul, Michael Dawson, Aaron Lennon, and Benoit Assou-Ekotto. "Benny" seems to be in the Spurs wilderness at the moment, and of the others, perhaps Michael Dawson will get a game tonight. Both he and Kaboul scored in that 6-1 home win, with Robbie Keane, Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe (2) also scoring. Keane scored our away goal.

Things didn't go so well for Martin Jol in the early league games that season, and he suffered that ignominious dismissal which came to light during Spurs' next UEFA Cup game against Getafe in October 2007.

Gareth Bale made his European debut (as a substitute) in that 6-1 game against Anorthosis. Look where he is now. (SIGH)

Like Benoit Assou-Ekotto, most of us will be in the wilderness tonight, as no TV rights holder in the UK has chosen to cover this game (ITV will cover next week's home game). I'm at home, and like many of you, I will be searching for a stream to follow our fortunes. Contributions to the post-match survey could be sparse!

The four World Cup players yet to figure in Spurs' season (Vertonghen, Chadli, Dembele and Paulinho) have all travelled with the squad. Dembele features in the official site's pre-match publicity, so one assumes he will start. Michel Vorm hasn't been named for this phase of the Europa League, so it looks like Friedel will get a game. Kyle Naughton has to miss Sunday's home game against QPR, so one assumes he will play tonight.

All in all, Spurs have strong squad out there in Cyprus. Lloris, Dier, Holtby, Bentaleb, Soldado, Townsend, Rose and Veljkovic have also travelled, although I haven't seen a full squad list. Kyle Walker and Vlad Chiriches are absent through injury.

It doesn't look as if it will be a roll-over for Spurs tonight, but surely we have the strength in depth and resolve to come home with a positive result to make next week's home leg comfortable?

If I find a decent stream, I'll try to offer a match report tonight.

· 10 years ago this week - Atouba scored THAT goal at Newcastle!
