Season re-launch required!

One advantage Spurs have over our visitors this week is that we have been football-free, whilst Roberto Martinez's side had to fight their way through a tough Capital One Cup battle against Barnsley on Wednesday night. Everton went 2-0 down within half an hour; levelled the scores early in the second half, but then went 3-2 down before Lukaku took the game into extra time, and then scored one of two more goals to secure a 5-3 win.

Everton will now have to travel to Reading in the third round, whilst we host Arsenal!

Martinez did field a weakened team against Barnsley, resting goalkeeper Tim Howard, and his only available top-line full-back Seamus Coleman, Gareth Barry, Kone and Barkley. Recent signing Gerard Deulofeu (who spent time at Goodison on loan two years ago) was one of Martinez's second half substitutes who helped to rescue the situation. Ross Barkley was another 46th minute substitute.

Left back Leighton Baines remains absent for a further three months, and much-rated youngster Brendan Galloway was injured last week in the home defeat against Man City. Galloway impressed against us when we won 1-0 at Goodison on the last day of last season.

Everton's passionate but hard to please fans have once again not been happy so far this season. After starting their season with a disappointing home draw against Watford, fans organised a plane flying a critical banner over St. Mary's Stadium, only to see their team amaze the hosts with a 3-0 win. Everton followed this with a disappointing result, but a decent performance against a Man City side which looks the one to beat this season. Then, in mid-week at Oakwell, Everton fans were be-moaning "Twenty years without a trophy". We all know who they beat on the way to that!

Of course, Spurs fans are not happy either. They haven't seen their team win yet, and they still await the arrival of a strike partner or support for Harry Kane. The much-publicised Saido Berahino saga runs on, but the club has this morning (Friday) confirmed the signing of 23 year old Son Heung-min from Bayer Leverkusen. Son will wear number 7, but his work permit and International clearance are awaited. I look forward to shouting "Come on my Son!", but maybe that won't be tomorrow.

Mauricio Pochettino has announced that Clinton N'Jie is short of match fitness, and will not be involved tomorrow. He had a pre-season injury with Lyon apparently. Christian Eriksen is still not fit either. Andros Townsend may be involved for the first time this season.

It's another crunch game. Both teams will be desperate to take a win into the first International break. It is certainly not an easy result to call, but I am hoping for passionate home support for Spurs to help us to win by the odd goal, and I'll go for a 2-1 home win. Last season's home win saw a stirring performance. A season re-launch is required!

Tomorrow's match referee is Mike Jones, who we've seen 12 times over the last five years. His last game with us the 2-1 home win against Burnley in December. Harry Kane scored, and Erik Lamela scored a rare but cracking goal. Mr. Jones refereed that 2-2 draw when Everton played Watford.

Did you know? - The only League games we played against Everton outside the top tier were in Division Two in the 1930-31 season. Everton had been one of the founder members of The Football League in 1888 and until 1951, this was the only season they spent in a lower division. Everton finished Champions of Division Two in 1931, whilst we were third and had to wait until 1933 for promotion. Everton won 4-2 at Goodison and we won the return game 1-0. Jimmy Smy, who only ever played 17 games for Spurs, scored both our goals at Goodison. Smy was born in Edmonton in 1907, so he was a true local boy. He played his last game for Spurs in November 1930. He subsequently moved to Sittingbourne, where he ended his football career. Smy died in Brisbane, Australia in 1997, aged 89. Ted Harper scored our winner in the home game against "The Toffees" in March 1931.
