A record that needs improvement

Only the final day's coverage of the Premier League is left to be finalised, but until then it's Sky TV all the way for Spurs, who are still mathematically title contenders, and most definite Champions League contenders. The latter description also applies to Louis Van Gaal's Manchester United.

Both Van Gaal and his team have suffered a great deal of criticism this season, with the manager's job perhaps considered at greatest threat at Christmas time after United had failed to win in 8 consecutive games in all competitions. They dropped out of the Champions League, and have since been knocked out of the Europa League by arch-enemy Liverpool. They were stuck in sixth position in the Premier League, having lost to Bournemouth, Norwich and Stoke in consecutive games.

The greatest criticism of Van Gaal's United has perhaps been the style of football, which has so rarely been entertaining this season. Entertainment and "Attack, attack, attack!" are fundamental requirements and expectations of any United fan.

United are still outside the top four (and have been since December), but having won four of their last five league games, they are very much in contention for a Champions League place, chasing not only Man City, but both Arsenal and Tottenham too, who remain within reach. Leicester are 16 points ahead of United (before this week-end's games) and are surely beyond the reach of the proud former Champions.

United's recent results and progress have been achieved without captain Wayne Rooney, who is now nearing match fitness, but faces challenges to get back in both his club and national teams. The latest news is that Rooney could still be a week away from fitness.

18 year old Marcus Rashford had a dramatic introduction to the first team with two goals in both his first two games. He scored firstly in the Europa League Round of 32 against FC Midtjylland, and then two of the United goals that helped to beat Arsenal. Rashford scored the solitary goal at The Etihad to clinch the Manchester Derby, but he hasn't scored in other recent games.

Big money signing Anthony Martial has scored in three of the last four United games, including Sunday's 1-0 win over Everton.

United have managed to score more than one goal in three of their last 13 games. Those were three consecutive games against Shrewsbury, FC Midtjylland and Arsenal. Only one of those games was a league match. However, Leicester City are a prime example of a team achieving without necessarily scoring much!

Now is not just a good time, but a crucial moment for Spurs to improve one of their worst records against a Premier League opponent. United and Chelsea are our most formidable opposition statistically, and we still have to play both in the six game run-in. Whilst we have won twice at Old Trafford in recent years (the last win was on New Year's Day 2014), it is now 15 full years since we managed a home win against this team. That was against a team which had already secured the Premier League title. That was also one of the rare occasions when Sir Alex Ferguson lost three consecutive league games. Louis Van Gaal has that dubious record twice already, as it happened last April, as well as in December. Incidentally, the last time Spurs lost three consecutive Premier League games was in November 2012.

United are one of only two teams to whom we have lost away in Premier League games this season. Our game at Old Trafford came on Day One of the season, back in August, when only Kyle Walker's unfortunate own goal gave them victory. (Man Utd 1 Spurs 0 - 08/08/15)

It's a full 8 months since we met, making this the longest wait for the return match of an opening day fixture since we played Man City at home in August 2010, and away in May, when they got revenge for Peter Crouch's winning goal the previous year. That City game in 2011 had been scheduled for Cup semi-final week-end, when City played and beat United!

United haven't been to Tottenham since December 2014, when we drew 0-0. (Spurs 0 United 0 - 28/12/14)

31 year old German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was a high profile summer signing for United, but has only made 13 Premier League starts, with 5 appearances off the bench. He's been missing since 20th March, and has a knee injury at present. Former Spur Michael Carrick, now 34, has been getting more games lately, and may feature on Sunday.

Spurs team news is awaited, but this is a game where Jan Vertonghen may be available. My feeling is that he will have to wait on the bench for a return, with Kevin Wimmer very solid beside Alderweireld. Hopefully, Erik Lamela can return, and Pochettino can field his first choice team, which will include player of the month Harry Kane! With the home crowd and their team at their best, I really fancy Spurs to win this one, perhaps by the odd goal in three. Like the rest of you, I'll be hoping that Sunderland battle away for at least a point against Leicester, and that we can perhaps close the gap, and keep the title race going!

Sunday's match referee will be Mike Dean, who we have seen more than any other referee over the last five years. Mr Dean is surely one of the most reliable and competent referees on the Premier League panel, and certainly one of my favourites. This season, Mr. Dean was in charge of our away draw against Swansea, a 3-1 home win against Villa, and most recently our 4-1 home win against Sunderland. He most recently took charge of a Spurs v Man Utd game in December 2013, when we drew 2-2.

· Premier League results 10 years ago this week - 10 years ago, Paul Stalteri scored one of his two Premier League goals for Spurs. This one was not against West Ham, but helped to secure a 2-1 win over Man City!
