Make it more like 2007 than 2011 Spurs!

It seems hard to believe, but it is almost three years now since we played Fulham. That was in April, 2014 when we beat "The Cottagers" 3-1, with goals by Paulinho, Harry Kane and Younes Kaboul. Sidwell scored Fulham's goal, and could have made the score 3-2 with a late penalty, but he hit weakly and too centrally, allowing Hugo Lloris to make a save.

That Kane goal was his third Premier League goal for Spurs, and it was his third goal in three consecutive Premier League games with Tim Sherwood temporarily at the Spurs helm. That end of season form presaged Kane's phenomenal record in the following seasons, but Spurs may have to do without him tomorrow, due to a knock suffered in Belgium, and the need for a late fitness test before this game. I fancy that Son Heung-min, who was substitute on Thursday night, will start up front for Spurs. Vincent Janssen didn't even make the 18 for Gent, and manager Mauricio Pochettino has been quoted as saying that Janssen needs to "show more" to get into the squad. Maybe it's the bench for Vincent tomorrow.

Both teams have undergone radical changes since that last meeting. No less than 13 of our 18-man squad have moved on, and for Fulham, only former Spurs captain Scott Parker remains of their 18 . Scott is now 36, and whilst still playing a part for Fulham, in recent games he has only appeared as a late substitute. He has made 12 Championship starts and 13 appearances off the bench in league matches this season. Scott had almost two full seasons with us, and was the Spurs Odyssey player of the season in 2011-12, when we finished fourth, but were deprived of a Champions League berth thanks to the "other team in Fulham".

With former Watford manager Slavisa Jokanovic at the helm, Fulham are finally having a tilt at a return to the Premier League after two poor seasons in which further relegation was a very real threat. Fulham are currently 8th in the league table, six points off the play-off zone. Their form since the turn of the year has been pretty good, winning 6 of theeir 10 games. Two of those wins have been in the FA Cup, away to Cardiff and at home (4-1) to Premier League Hull. One player to have caught the eye in both those games was 16 year old Ryan Sessegnon, who scored in both matches. Sessegnon has a twin brother - Steven - who played in the Fulham U-18 side which convincingly beat Spurs 3-0 yesterday. Ryan is a left back or midfielder with plenty of speed and attacking flair. Spurs are rumoured to be one of several Premier League clubs already keeping an eye on this lad, and maybe they will get a very close, possibly uncomfortable look tomorrow. Ryan is already playing ahead of his age group for thee England Under 19 team.

Most of Fulham's goals this season have come from Derby loanee Chris Martin. The Scottish International striker is 28 and has loads of experience, having played chiefly for Norwich and Derby. We will also have to look out for Norwegian International midfielder Stefan Johansen, signed this season from Celtic and scorer of 8 goals in both league and cup competitions.

Fulham have a couple of other former Spurs players on their books. One is right back Ryan Fredericks, who made his one and only senior Spurs appearance in the second half of a 4-1 win over Anzhi in December 2013. Fredericks impressed, but never got another chance. Ryan spent time on loan at Millwall and Middlesbrough, before being signed by Bristol City before he was snapped up by Fulham early last season. Unfortunately for him, Ryan was sent off in a recent league game and misses this game through suspension.

The other former Spurs Junior is Fulham goalkeeper David Button, now aged 27. Button served a long apprenticeship at the club with various loan spells, before he was signed by Brentford, with whom he had a successful time, particularly when they made the play-offs in 2015. That was the season Alex Pritchard had a successful time on loan with Mark Warburton's Brentford side, when he was still on Spurs' books.

Our last FA Cup meeting with Fulham was a disaster for Spurs. It was a fourth round tie in January 2011 which we lost 4-0. Mousa Dembele scored the goal of the game to make it 4-0 at half-time. It was a fine individual goal, and we have not seen enough of these from Mousa since he signed for Spurs in 2012. Skipper Michael Dawson had an individual nightmare, mis-placing a ball to another future Spur Clint Dempsey, who was brought down by Hutton. The ex-factor played its part as former Spur Danny Murphy scored from the spot. Within minutes, Murphy scored a second penalty after Michael Dawson had been sent off for tugging back Dembele. Michael Dawson, now with Hull of course, is currently out of action through injury, but he did sit out his team's defeat at Craven Cottage in the last round.

A happier cup memory for Spurs fans is the 4-0 win here 10 years ago, also in the fifth round, when Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov scored two goals apiece. How time flies!

The result tomorrow is not likely to be such a big score in favour of either team, but after Thursday night's defeat in Belgium, and with thousands of Spurs fans helping to fill an almost sold-out Craven Cottage, Mauricio Pochettino needs to get a positive result and send those fans home happy. How he does that and balances the need to rest and rotate players with next Thursday's second leg game at Wembley, I dont quite know. Although Jan Vertonghen and Harry Kane are having late tests, I would be surprised to see either of them tomorrow. I do expect to see the three substitutes on Thursday start, but the team might not be strong enough to please the travelling fans. It might read Vorm; Trippier, Carter-Vickers, Wimmer, Davies; Dier, Winks; Eriksen, Alli, Nkoudou; Son.

It will be a hard-fought game, and the BBC will be rubbing their hands to have this one (2pm kick-off). I'm hoping we can edge it by the odd goal in three. Make it more like 2007 than 2011 Spurs!

Referee Bobby Madley has not scored well on our post-match surveys in his three previous games with us this season. Those were Liverpool (H), Leicester (H) and Man Utd (A), and we won none of those games. It's time for Mr. Madley to break his duck and see us win this season!
