Can Spurs beat a Mourinho team away for the first time?

As a result of our third place in Group E of the Champions League this week, Spurs joined Manchester United in the list of teams for the Europa League Round of 32 draw, which takes place on Monday starting at 12 noon BST. The rules dictate that we cannot meet a team from our own country in this round, so we must wait and see whether we will meet in a European match for the first time since December 1963. When we met then (and sadly lost 4-3 on aggregate), it was in the second round of the European Cup-Winners Cup, when we were defending champions and the "Busby Babes" had won the 1963 FA Cup Final. Because Mourinho's United failed to win their Europa League group, they will not be seeded, unlike Spurs.

There is a record on offer for Spurs this week-end. That record is to beat a Mourinho team away from home for the first time. It's easy to research this matter because we have only previously met Mourinho as manager when in charge at Chelsea and in 2011 when he was Real Madrid's manager. We know all too well our dismal away record against Chelsea in the Premier League, and our one away meeting with Real Madrid when "The Special One" was in charge did not end well. (Real Madrid 4 Spurs 0 - 05.04.2011)

Not so long ago, it was unthinkable that Spurs could beat United at Old Trafford, but we have famously won there twice in recent years. Those wins came in successive Old Trafford meetings too. Firstly in September 2012, we won 3-2 with an early own goal inspired by Jan Vertonghen's run, and further goals by Gareth Bale and Clint Dempsey. The following season, on New Year's Day 2014, we won 2-1 with goals by Adebayor and Christian Eriksen. My "Heroes of Tottenham" headline was inspired by a Kirk Douglas film - "The Heroes of Telemark". Incidentally congratulations to Kirk Douglas who is celebrating his 100th birthday today - 9th December!

Can Spurs achieve that first away win against a Mourinho team? It would certainly be a great bonus for Spurs and you too could check out your Premier League betting bonus here. I personally think that Spurs do have a great chance, but perhaps the most likely result is a draw. Sky's TV viewers (kick-off 2.15pm Sunday) should be happy with the fare on offer. Whatever happens, United will stay below Spurs, but a win would put us a precious 9 points ahead of the team closest below us in the Premier League table.

This match comes at a good time for Spurs, who have regained their good form after last week's 5-0 win over Swansea, and Wednesday night's Champions League win over CSKA Moscow. Key players have returned, such as Harry Kane, who is once again in good scoring form with 6 goals in the last 6 games. Christian Eriksen has found his creative boots. The Dele Alli - Harry Kane partnership is working well, and Toby Alderweireld is match fit. Mourinho will be worried, and maybe he will try to "park the bus" this time!

April's 3-0 home win against United came at another time when Spurs were in tip-top form, as it was followed by that superb 4-0 win at Stoke and a real belief that we could overturn Leicester.

Of course, United are to be respected, and whilst their recent form is not quite as good as that of Spurs, they have picked up in the last few games. Ibrahimovic had a relatively barren spell between mid-September and early November with only one goal in 11 games (and that was in The Europa League), but like Harry Kane, he too has been in great form in the last six games, scoring 7 goals, including that opener at Goodison Park last week, when his shot from outside the area spun over the line.

Another summer signing for Mourinho - Henrikh Mkhitaryan - was one of those who impressed against us for Borussia Dortmund last season, but he has taken a while to settle in under Mourinho. The Armenian has started the last three games though, playing a full part in some brighter football for United, not least when beating West Ham 4-1 in the EFL Cup quarter-final. Whilst United have often been seen to play in Mourinho's ultra defensive style this season, I have noticed some attractive football, which has featured good forward passing into space for eager runners.

Another major signing for Mourinho (and the biggest headline maker with that massive fee) was of course Paul Pogba, who attracted critical headlines in his early games, but that massive £87 million fee was not his fault. Pochettino's plan for Pogba will surely involve both Mousa Dembele (rested on Wednesday) and Victor Wanyama. United club captain Wayne Rooney is now 31 and has only started 6 of the 14 Premier League games so far. The players most used in these games have been goalkeeper De Gea, Ibrahimovic, Pogba, and Luis Valencia (primarily at right back).

United's only significant injury problem would appear to be centre-back Chris Smalling with a broken toe, whilst Spurs will still be without Erik Lamela, and perhaps Vincent Janssen. Ben Davies may be ready, but I expect Danny Rose to play on Sunday, with Davies perhaps getting game time against Hull next Wednesday.

I am hoping for a humdinger of a game, and not one with negativity which can feature in Mourinho-led games. I think that a score draw is the most likely result.

P.S - After Manchester City's 4-2 defeat at Leicester, a win for Spurs would put them back in the top four above Guardiola's City on goal difference. COME ON YOU SPURS!

Match referee Bobby Madley is in charge of a Spurs game for the third time already this season. Both his previous games with us were drawn - at home against Liverpool and Leicester. Mr Madley's one game in charge of United this season was also a draw - at home against Stoke.

Did you know?:- - The last time Spurs travelled to Old Trafford in December for a Premier League game was in December 2000. We lost 2-0. Paul Scholes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the goals. We have played a game since then in December (2009), but that was a League Cup tie.

· Reviewing Spurs' last Champions League Season - 2010-11 - 6 years ago this week-end, we drew 1-1 at home to Chelsea.
