Spurs travelled to Pride Park on a cool evening on the back of a victory in the North London derby on Monday. The 3-2 win over Arsenal moved Spurs clear of the bottom of the table and halted their climb to the top. Derby lost their last game against Manchester City having beaten Manchester United and leaders Liverpool before. Last season Spurs beat the "Rams" 2-1 at their training ground.

Spurs lined up with Austin in goal behind Maghoma and Tanganga with Marsh continuing at right back and Bennetts on the left. Amos and Skipp took up defensive midfield duties with Edwards ahead of them flanked by Harrison on the right and Shashoua on the left in support of Loft up front. Derby included first teamers Shackell, Hanson and Lowe.

Spurs defended the North end in the first half and were put under pressure from the start. Austin had to make a save from the lively Thomas. Austin dropped a high ball when Tanganga collided with him allowing Jacobsen a chance that was blocked. Shashoua exchanged passes with Harrison before firing wide. Derby continued to have the better of the game and Babos drew a save from Austin before Spurs began to gain a foothold when Harrison forced Barnes into a save. Bennetts played in Loft to get into the area and draw a save from the keeper. Guy latched onto a poor ball from Amos but fired over. Bird had a shot that was deflected for a corner as Spurs finished the half better.

Spurs made a change for the start of the second half replacing Skipp with Pritchard to build on the first half. Loft was played in, only to be pulled back by Shackell who was booked before Edwards played in Bennetts on the left. The full back got into the area and clipped the bar with a rising shot. Thomas made a break down the right and exchanged passes with Babos before scoring with a low drive that took a deflection to beat Austin.

Spurs made their second change replacing Shashoua with Tracey as they looked to get back on level terms. Edwards played in Harrision to draw a save from Barnes before making their last change. Loft was replaced by Sterling up front to use his pace. Derby were now sitting back more looking to break and when Vernam got the better of Amos the Spurs captain fouled him and was booked for doing so. Edwards had a free kick saved as Derby were happy to see out time for the three points.

This was a good performance if a little under par from Spurs in an open game. They rode the early pressure from their hosts and looked to be getting on top but they lacked the sharpness to capitalise on good approach play. Derby were sharper up front and it told with the only goal, giving the Spurs defence plenty of problems during the game. Spurs remain in eigth place and face Chelsea at Hotspur Way next month on the 18th. Chelsea are a point below Spurs but play Arsenal before travelling to Enfield so may rise.
