What are we fighting for? Our place in the top half for a start!

After the trials and tribulations of Bramall Lane on Thursday night, we now face another team who would overtake us with a win. If that happens (and after Burnley's draw against Sheffield United) we would even be in the bottom half again, which is where we were when Jose Mourinho was appointed last November. It begs the question, just what has he and the club achieved in football terms since his appointment?

Of course, we spent times decimated by injuries to too many key players. With Champions League football beyond us, and even possibly The Europa League, Spurs look in need of root and branch repair. In the post-Covid world, that does not look likely.

After the Sheffield United game, Jose Mourinho said:- “We have to be mentally stronger, to cope with what happened during the game,” he said. “We cannot mentally die after Michael Oliver gives a (VAR) decision. I know it is very difficult to take. We were not strong enough mentally to dominate in the second half.

“You have to be ready for negative moments and go on until the last minute. Now I think I know more about the profile of my players.”

José said he was “destroyed a little bit on the inside” by his side’s lack of fight against Sheffield United on Thursday. Well, our team needs to fight now a) to keep its place in the top half and b) to at least challenge for a Europa League place.

Perhaps it is as well that we are playing Everton, against whom we have such a great record in our Premier League meetings. This game will hopefully provide a landmark for Spurs who could gain their 100th Premier League point off the “Toffees”. This would be a first for Spurs, who have their best Premier League points tally against the Goodison Park side. Currently we are on a run of 14 games unbeaten against this opposition.

Both Spurs and Everton are among the only six ever present Premier League teams. They are also two of the longest serving members of the top flight, with Everton present at that level since 1954, and Spurs since 1978. There has been only one season in which the two teams met in the second tier. That was in 1930/31 when Everton led the division after beating Spurs 4-2 at Goodison Park on October 25th. Dixie Dean was one of the Everton scorers. Both Spurs goals were scored by inside forward Jimmy Smy. Smy was born in Edmonton on 24th November 1907, and only ever played 17 games for Spurs, scoring 6 goals in total. Smy played for non-league clubs before and after playing for Spurs. (Hampstead Town in 1927 and Sittingbourne in 1934) According to the English National Football Archive, Smy died in 1997.

Spurs won the return game in that 1930-31 season 1-0 with the goal scored by Ted Harper. Harper scored 37 goals in that season when Spurs were captained by Tom Meads, who was born in Grassmoor, Chesterfield on 2nd November, 1900.

Everton were inevitably promoted in 1931, and (like Spurs in 1950-51) won the League Championship the very next season. Dixie Dean, famous for his 60 league goal tally in 1927/28, scored the little matter of 39 league goals in Everton's promotion season and 45 in the 1931/2 title season. The "Toffees" had also won the League title in 1927/8. Dixie Dean scored a phenomenal 349 league goals for Everton in 399 games plus 28 goals in 32 FA Cup games.

Spurs didn't play Everton between March 1951 and December 1954 as the "Toffees" spent their last three seasons outside the top flight during that time. Spurs can say they have spent more seasons than Everton in the top flight over the last 70 years - just!

Last season’s home game against Everton was the last match of our domestic season. We secured our Champions League place with a 2-2 draw, thanks to goals by Eric Dier and Christian Eriksen.

It was heart-warming to see Everton's Andre Gomes return to action in late February after he sustained that horrific injury in this season's away game played in early November. Heung-min Son was sent off as a result of that incident because he “endangered the safety of a player” but the red card was overturned on appeal by The Premier League.

Before all the support and goodwill for the injured Gomes there had been an apology from Son. “Son is a very nice guy. I explained to him that things like this happen, and obviously it wasn’t on purpose,” says Gomes.

Jose gave a press conference on Saturday in which he expressed doubt as to Dele Alli's fitness, as he had apparently suffered a hamstring problem in training. We won't know for certain whether he can play until nearer the game. Ever the optimist, I've gone for a 3-1 home win and a climb back up to 8th place. That would still leave us below Arsenal, who we face next Sunday.

Tomorrow's match referee is Graham Scott, whose last game in the middle with Spurs was our Boxing Day home win against Brighton. Mr. Scott was VAR for our recent game against Manchester United in which he overturned Jon Moss's award of a second penalty against us towards the end of the game.

Did you know? - Former Spur Gylfi Sigurdsson (now 30) started his UK career with Reading. Spurs Odyssey has a report of Sigurdsson scoring from a free kick against a Spurs U-18 side in February 2007. The next time he scored against a Spurs team was for Swansea in March 2015. Gylfi's next (and last) goal against his former team was in our 6-2 win at Goodison Park in December 2018. Let's hope he doesn't score in this game!
