Not so optimistic now

My headline for last month’s review asked a question – “Ready to spring forward?” We were in fifth place and after we beat Newcastle 5-1 in our first game this month I wrote “Spurs have the whiff of Champions League in their nostrils!” That still holds true, and let’s face it we have spent most of the season dismissing the prospect of elite European football next season.

After beating both Newcastle and Aston Villa by four goals we were in control of our destiny and three points ahead of Arsenal who had just lost a second of three consecutive games. However, Brighton, who had beaten Arsenal, also managed a win at our stadium and sang “North London is ours!” We failed to score in that game and also at Brentford and whilst this week Eric Dier claimed we still had control of our destiny, that entails beating “super team” Liverpool at Anfield, and also the little matter of a much-delayed NLD. Arsenal have climbed to fourth place and are two points ahead of us. I am not so optimistic now. How about you?

Our April schedule has been completed due to next weekend’s Leicester game being moved to Sunday (May 1st) as “The Foxes” have a Europa Conference League semi-final to negotiate against Jose Mourinho’s Roma. We have five games left. Three of those are at home and the last game is at Norwich, who could be doomed to relegation by then.

Ever-present starters in our four games were unsurprisingly, Lloris, Romero, Dier, Davies, Emerson Royal, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Kulusevski, Son, Kane. Lucas Moura came off the bench in all 4 games

Son was our top scorer with 4 goals including his hat-trick at Villa Park. Harry Kane hasn't scored this month, and for the second time this season has failed to score in five consecutive games. Harry has made more starts (42 of our 48 games) than any other player. The last time he did not start a game for Spurs was on 9th January against Morecambe. He does still lead Son in relation to goals in all competitions, although "Sonny" has 17 Premier league goals while Harry has 5 less.

Emerson Royal scored his first club goal against Newcastle. Ben Davies scored his first Premier League goal since December 2017 in the same game. Matt Doherty also scored his second club goal of the season against Newcastle. The club believes this was the first time in our history that three defenders scored in the same game at a competitive level and challenged readers to come up with an example. No-one has stepped forward as yet.

Doherty sadly had to go off quite early in the Villa game and his season is over. This was particularly sad as most fans had recognised and praised his improvement in form and contribution to our recent good form. Doherty was even our player of the month, partially because of his absence from the two most recent performances which were goalless and disappointing. Christian Romero, who has been a consistent performer this month and since his welcome return to the team in February, ran Doherty closest for the April player vote.

Hugo Lloris, who has now made 411 club appearances and if he plays all five remaining games will enter the top ten club appearances list, leads the player of the season vote.

Oliver Skipp signed a new contract taking him till June 2027, rumoured to be worth in excess of £50,000 per week. He won't be playing again this season though, as he had surgery in America on April 26th.
