Consistently inconsistent in February

Last month we played six games, won three and lost three. We have the same return this month. Last month our three defeats were to Chelsea. This month we lost two consecutive home games – to Southampton and Wolves – and later managed to lose to relegation-threatened Burnley.

Last month one of our wins was an astounding 3-2 at Leicester with Steven Bergwijn the hero in the fifth and seventh minutes of added time. This month, we travelled to The Etihad fearing a fourth consecutive league defeat but achieved a wonderful 3-2 win. Harry Kane was our hero with a scintillating 9.5 out of 10 performance including two goals, one of which came in the dying seconds of added time. Our other win was by a convincing scoreline of 4-0 at Elland Road. This was out biggest ever away win against the once “Mighty” Leeds. Harry Kane was again in superb form and has won our Player of the Month award. The defeat led to the departure of Leeds cult legend Marcelo Bielsa, who remains a football icon for fans, players, and esteemed managers alike.

We’ve had highs and lows again. We are consistently inconsistent. Despite those horrible home defeats, the wins at Manchester City and Leeds have improved player and manager gradings for the month and given us a positive goal difference. We have seen the debuts of new arrivals Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski, both of whom have impressed and definitely improved our squad. "Kulu" has scored his first two goals in his last three games, both of which have been excellent finishes in our two exciting away wins. Bentancur has already suffered an injury but has shown us plenty of quality both as a defensive midfielder, but also as a creator.

Kane has scored five of our twelve goals this month. Son has scored two. Between them they now have the record of 37 Premier League goal involvements as a pair, topping a list of eminent names. They will go on to increase their lead in this table.

Ever-present players this month were Lloris, Romero, Davies, Son, and Kane. Emerson Royal (4+2) and Dejan Kulusevski (3+3) also made 6 appearances. Note that Eric Dier has not yet been booked this season in 26 appearances.

We remain in seventh place, and despite at one time seemingly falling out of the race for a Champions League place – five teams are competing for one place here – we are back in that hunt, although perhaps not favourites. We have an FA Cup Fifth Round game to look forward to today (1st March) and hopefully a quarter-final will await us later this month.

One way or another, we are scheduled to play five games in March which will include a trip to Old Trafford on March 12th. It should be another exciting month.
