January 2004
...if you want to remind yourself of the matches played during this month, then See the Fixtures page here. By working your way back through the previous month's figures, you can review the performances over the last 4 years!
Well, the curse of the Manager of the Month award worked its usual oracle, as Martin Jol duly won the December prize, as predicted, but Spurs slumped after New Year's Day, winning just one more match during January after that magnificent performance against Everton, and finishing with a negative goal difference and the poorest performance figures since October.
Spurs failed to score in three games, although technically we all know we DID score at Old Trafford! Both Cup games were unimpressive really, as a Robbie Keane classic secured our passage through the third round, and we have to face a home replay against West Brom.
There is plenty to be optimistic about of course, as once again, Spurs fans struggle to keep count of the new faces arriving (Mido, El Hamdaoui, Cerny, Reid and Dawson at the time of writing hours before the closure of the January transfer window). I must stress that the last two named have yet to be confirmed as talks continue late on Monday night 31st January.
Spurs missed Fredi Kanoute a lot of the time this month, and Mido will provide a useful alternative with height and skill aplenty. Spurs have that home replay then hopefully a home Fifth Round tie against Nottingham Forest, against who both Reid and Dawson would be Cup-Tied. It seems to me that the management at White Hart Lane is not prepared to settle for "top-half progress" this season, but is going out and out for some form of European qualification. That MUST be achievable, don't you think?
