One high - two lows

There was one notable high and two notable lows for Spurs in January. Our matches against the Manchester teams gave us one result of either dimension, whilst the second low was that Cup defeat at The Emirates.

For me, going out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle is always depressing, and I was just about over that trauma, when along came another trouncing by Manchester City. As a result of that game, our goal difference has once again fallen into the red.

However, on balance, we are still doing well in the League, with three wins out of the four games played this month. A second successive win at Old Trafford, and a fine win at Swansea takes us to a run of five consecutive away wins. That is a record which could realistically be extended tomorrow (1st February) at Hull.

We have also climbed two places this month to fifth. Tim Sherwood, despite those two soul-destroying defeats, has marginally improved his overall record compared against last month, and he has now been in charge for 9 games. He does not yet match AVB's overall record though.

There is plenty of concern amongst Spurs fans though, mainly regarding Tim's preference for Nabil Bentaleb (who made his full Spurs debut this month) over Etienne Capoue. Bentaleb (still only 19) was badly exposed against the masterful Manchester City midfield, but overall, he has impressed most fans, being voted man of the match against Crystal Palace.

Hugo Lloris continues to impress, and maintains the lead in the cumulative voting for Player of the Season.

Emmanuel Adebayor has been voted Player of the month for the second month, with another three goals, and two man of the match votes at Old Trafford and Swansea.

At the time of writing, the only significant piece of transfer news is the loan of Lewis Holtby to Fulham for the rest of the season. Simon Dawkins (who never made a first team appearance for Spurs) finally got a permanent transfer to Derby, whilst right back Adam Smith (who rarely made a first team appearance) has got a move to Bournemouth. Ryan Fredericks has won himself a new contract, and has just gone on loan to Millwall till the end of the season. Fredericks impressed in his second half appearance against Anzhi last month.

Sherwood has once again been hampered by the absence of Younes Kaboul, Jan Vertonghen, Paulinho, Sandro and Andros Townsend, none of whom have appeared in January. For that matter, record signing Erik Lamela has also not been seen in action this month. Needless to say really, but the return of any or all of these players will be key to Spurs managing a genuine challenge upon the top four.

February brings us 6 games, with a return to Europa League action against Juande Ramos's Dnipro. Three of our four league games will be away from home, with the one home game against Everton potentially the toughest game coming up.

Don't forget to check out the players' current figures re. appearances, cards, goals scored and accumulated ratings to date below.
