What is it they say about March?

In like a lion, out like a lamb?

Well, Spurs certainly started the month like a Lion rampant, with great wins at home to Arsenal and Inter, but you can't say they went out like a lamb, with a vital away win at Swansea. Like the weather though, Spurs suffered a big freeze, losing three games on the trot for the first time this season. That was a blip and a half, but we've managed to hold onto third place at the end of another month, and despite losing 4-1 in the San Siro, we survived in the Europa League thanks to one away goal, and face Basel this week in the quarter-final. AVB and all Spurs fans still carry hopes of silverware this season!

Jan Vertonghen was your player of the month for March, playing in all 6 games, and finishing as our top scorer this month too! (Vertonghen was alqso voted the Barclays Premier League player of the month)Vertonghen scored both our goals at Anfield, where we gifted Liverpool their winning goals, with uncharacteristic mistakes. Up to that point, it had been such a good performance by Spurs, who had outplayed the hosts until Kyle Walker's brainstorm of a 40 yard back-pass that took Hugo Lloris by surprise.

Vertonghen scored 4 goals in all, which is three more than did Adebayor, although arguably, Adebayor got his foot to the most important conversion of the onth against Inter, to ensure our Europa League passage. Perhaps as a symptom of his frustration, Adebayor picked up three bookings this month.

Another player to have increased his bookings count (two) out of proportion to goals scored or created is Lewis Holtby, who needs to find the form and impact he had upon his new team in his first two appearances off the bench at Norwich and West Brom two months ago. Lewis is getting little chance, and perhaps we have yet to see him in his favoured role.

Gareth Bale continued his February form at the start of the month with goals in the Arsenal win and at home against Inter, and he is now a clear leader in the cumulative votes for player of the season. Vertonghen scored 8 or more out of 10 though in four of the six games, and was man of the match twice (once more than Bale) in the month.

We do seem to see the best of Jan in his favoured position at centre back, and although he has often covered for us at left back, the experiment of playing Benoit Assou-Ekotto in front of Vertonghen against Fulham just didn't work, so I hope not to see that again.

We have a potential six games in April, should we conquer Basel and make it to the Europa League semi-finals. If that does not happen, then we might play the Chelsea away leagaue game, which has to be re-arranged due to their FA Cup semi-final on 14th April.

One considerable worry is the injury to Hugo Lloris (knee), and we await further information regarding his recovery time.
