How the players are doing so far

This week @AlasdairGold, who has a great Spurs presence on Twitter and football.london, offered his personal (and inevitably arbitrary) grades on all of Spurs players this season. In general terms I expect you would find agreement in most areas, but Spurs Odyssey’s monthly review offers you the accumulating assessment of every player based upon the submissions of hundreds of regular post-match survey voters. Those grades can be viewed at the bottom of this page.

Unsurprisingly, you will find that Harry Kane is leading the way. Harry has 27 club goals to his name, 17 Premier League goals and is also the first player this season to have 30 Premier League goal involvements. Harry is your player of the month for March.

A lot of Kane’s assists were for Heung-min Son, who was injured in the Arsenal game and hasn’t scored in his last seven games. Let’s hope “Sonny” is back after the International break.

Last month I wrote “Bale has lifted the mood” after his performances in the last four games of that month when we started winning again. We won four of our six games this month but losing the two most important matches (away to Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb) naturally put a dampener on our season, to say the least. We have climbed back to sixth place in the league and have won four of our last five league games.

Gareth has said he expected to go back to Madrid after Euro 2020. "The main reason I came to Spurs this year was to play football first and foremost but going into the Euros I wanted to be match fit. The original plan was only to do a season at Spurs and then after the Euros I'll still have a year left [on my contract] at Real Madrid. My plan is to go back and that is as far as I have planned."

Hugo Lloris, Davinson Sanchez and Kane have started all six games this month. Sanchez is enjoying something of a return to form and to the favour of manager Jose Mourinho. On the other hand, one of Jose’s early favourites when he arrived at the club, Eric Dier, has started only two games this month.

Sissoko has played in all 6 games but started only two. Lucas Moura started 4 and came off the bench in the other two games. Lucas was voted man of the match twice this month and has grabbed the attention of his manager.

Joe Hart (or his media agent) dropped a massive clanger when mis-interpreting the score in Zagreb, posting "Job Done" on Twitter. Joe has profusely apologised for the error after our worst team performance in ages – possible in the history of the spursometer.

We all know Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's qualities, but he is a yellow card magnet and in a cameo appearance in the first leg game against Dinamo Zagreb, got himself suspended from the second leg, when his leadership and battling presence was badly missed. Proportionately speaking Lamela and Lo Celso also have poor disciplinary records. Lo Celso got himself booked in only one and a half appearances! It was good to see Gio back though.

Joe Rodon made his first start since 31st January at Brighton and performed well at Villa Park. He is now busy with Wales, alongside Bale.

We scored 10 goals in our 6 games. Kane scored 5. Bale (2), Lamela and Vinicius added to the tally. Lamela’s incredible rabona goal against Arsenal might be goal of the month and even the whole season but counts for nothing as we lost to our local enemy. Vinicius scored his first Premier League goal and reached 10 club goals for the season. It was refreshing to see him start alongside Kane at Villa Park. We passed the 100 goal mark during this month. The current total stands at 105 after 48 games.

Next month we have five games. Four of those are league matches including Manchester United and Everton, whilst Manchester City await in the League Cup Final at Wembley on 25th April. Reports are emerging that a small crowd might be permitted at this game if it is regarded as a test event under the ongoing Covid regulations. We will have to wait and see.
