Spurs edge it with a touch of Jenas!
It was becoming a familiar scoreline – 1-0 to Spurs. This one was the fourth consecutive home win by that score, and just the fifth (at home) in this year’s Premier League competition. With one remaining home game against Man City, Spurs had the chance to match their best league clean sheet record, and were still two goals below their previous best home defensive record for a season (11 goals conceded in 1919-20). Spurs went 16 points ahead of the bottom three, with West Brom a further three points behind and seemingly condemned to relegation.

Spurs showed early promise, but ultimately a lack of adventure.
Due to late injuries and the tragic news of Wilson Palacios's bereavement, Harry Redknapp had to re-shuffle his side yet again. A 3-5-2 formation had been forecast, and the late withdrawal of Palacios gave Tom Huddlestone the lynch-pin role in the three man midfield between Jenas and Modric, with Hutton and Bale playing as wing-backs, and Corluka, Woodgate and King across the back. Robbie Keane had his usual role, playing behind Jermain Defoe.
I wouldn’t say that the game was end of season fare, despite the fact that Everton had an FA Cup Final to look forward to. Despite their absentees (and the most missed had to be Aaron Lennon), Spurs had the potential to be adventurous and perhaps gain the win they needed to give themselves a real chance of seventh place. It didn't work out that way though.

It’s the same old score!
For the seventh consecutive Premier League meeting between these two teams the score finished 2-1, and for the sixth of those seven matches, Spurs were the winners. Spurs have won 9 out of their last 10 league games against City and 10 out of 11 games including last season’s Carling Cup match at Eastlands. City really are one of our favourite opponents, as we have now culled 55 Premier League points from 24 matches. Spurs were confirmed as having the best home defensive record in terms of goals against, with just 10 conceded all season, which beat their record of 1919-20.

Spurs’ season ends in a whimper
Just like Newcastle at Villa Park, Spurs’ season ended in a rather tame whimper at Anfield, where thankfully the game was almost an irrelevance to the drama on offer in the fight for Premier League survival. Spurs fans were still thankful that they did not have an end of season relegation fight on their hands, especially in view of their meek performance against a dominating Liverpool side. Robbie Keane scored once again against a previous team, graciously not celebrating, but once Fernando Torres had given the home side a 31st minute lead, any hope of Spurs gaining the last Europa Cup place faded out of view. That fact was rather frustrating in view of the fact that Fulham did lose their last game, but it is domestic football only for Spurs next season.
Although Spurs' challenge for Europe went to the very last day of the season (and in a season which for so long was dominated by the spectre of relegation that is a fantastic achievement), their end of season form faded somewhat, no doubt affected by the absence of Player of the Season Aaron Lennon who was injured for the last three games. Wilson Palacios was also missed, but the bottom line surely is that there really is much to look forward to next season.
