The best we could do

Realistically, we knew at the end of April that Champions League qualification was beyond us. Despite losing two of our four games in the last month of the season, we won the last two, and Liverpool only managed one win, losing their last two games (emphatically). That, together with general all-round improvement in our form gave us the best result we could hope for - fifth place, and automatic qualification to the Group stage of next season's Europa League.

The one skill area where we declined in May was our score ratio, which has been below par for half of the season and four out of the last six months. We only scored three and conceded four this month. The shocking 3-0 defeat at Stoke was the one depressing result and performance. Stoke clearly hit form this month, as that 6-1 win over Liverpool on the last day showed. Apart from Charlie Adam hitting form, Marko Arnautovic ripped both of us apart, with Eric Dier and Emre Can having nightmare games against the speeedy winger.

Even in defeat at home to Man City, the team performed well, getting beaten only by one Aguero goal. Incidentally, Aguero has topped the Premier league score chart (26 goals), with Harry Kane in second place on 21 goals.

The win over Hull City wasn't a quality performance, but it come as a result of two quality goals, with Chadli's goal confirming the Belgian as our second highest Premier league scorer (11), one ahead of Christian Eriksen. The same margin applies in all games this season for Chadli and Eriksen.

At Goodison Park, we dominated possession and had more shots on goal, not that you'd believe that from the Match of the Day edit of a game we controlled. By beating Everton, we achieved our fifth league "double" of the season, and our ninth away win of the season. Our excellent Premier League record against "The Toffees" took a downturn a few years ago, but we are now unbeaten in our last five games against them, and have won the last three, so bragging rights have been fully restored. We've taken 82 Premier League points off Everton in 46 games now.

Danny Rose was the Spurs Odyssey player of the month for May, but he only appeared in two games, against Man City and Hull. Danny emerged as a real force for Spurs towards the end of the season, and was our man of the match in both those games he played this month, scoring a cracking goal against Hull too.

I shall formally reveal our players of the season in my review of the season, to be published in the next week or so. Thanks for following Spurs Odyssey
