Scraping into Europe - again

Remember this time last year? Except, of course, it wasn't this time last year. The equivalent period of last season was June and July when we played 9 post-lockdown games under Jose Mourinho, falling as low as 8th or 9th in the league, struggling to win any place in Europe. Then, because Arsenal would win the FA cup, we needed to finish sixth to ensure a Europa League place. We just about managed that, beating Wolves on goal difference only.

This year, with Ryan Mason taking over the helm for our last 7 games, 5 of which were in this month of May, we finished with three more points and again scraped into Europe, one point above Arsenal who do not have European football for the first time in 25 years. This time we have to settle for the new third tier European Conference League. Had Villarreal not beaten Manchester United last night in that exciting 22-penalty shoot-out, they too would be facing European Conference League football. Instead, they go into Pot 1 in next season's Champions League. Spurs loanee Juan Foyth was a member of that winning team by the way.

All this is a far cry from our Champions League appearance in the unsuccessful June 2019 Final at the Estadio Metropolitano, Madrid. Now there is even talk of Mauricio Pochettino coming back, even though he has only been with PSG since January. Would he? Could he? We'll have to wait and see.

We started this month by bouncing back from a disappointing Carabao Cup Final with a 4-0 win over bottom club Sheffield United, largely thanks to a fine hat-trick from Gareth Bale, who finished the month and the season with a flourish with two late goals against Leicester to secure seventh place. Harry Kane also scored in that game, and with a penalty against Wolves finished with 23 Premier League goals and the third Premier League Golden Boot of his career. Harry can add that to the individual award he won in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Those Golden Boots are individual awards of course, and we must wait and see if Harry seeks a team award elsewhere. In another symptom of Spurs' current decline, Harry is the only one of our Englishmen to make Gareth Southgate's provisional Euros squad for the tournament put back from last year.

Harry Kane is also our player of the season, but despite that, and despite Bale's five goals this month, captain Hugo Lloris was our player of the month with five consistent displays and a clear man of the match performance in our defeat at Leeds, where the score would have been worse without Hugo's exploits.

Hugo was one of 7 players who started all five games this month, along with Reguilon, Alderweireld, Hojbjerg, Son, Kane, and Dele Alli, who clearly had the favour of our interim coach. Gareth Bale also played in every game, with two appearances off the bench, one of which was the Leicester game. Steven Bergwijn left it till the defeat against Villa to score his one club goal of the season. Players generally absent included Aurier, Sanchez, Sissoko, Ndombele, Lucas Moura and Vinicius. Carlos has generally been peripheral all season, through no fault of his own, truth be told.

Still to come on Spurs Odyssey is next week's review of the season, but the accumulated grades below already tell the story of players' performances.
