Kranjcar is our Player of the Month
Only three domestic matches were played in November due to the final International break of 2009, and they all remain fresh in the memory, especially the historic 9-1 win over Wigan!
It is pleasing to report a great improvement in form and results with two wins and a draw chalked up, as we climbed to third place after 14 games.
December is going to be busy with 7 games on the horizon, starting with the Carling Cup quarter final at Old Trafford.
The month of November started with a disappointing team performance against Sunderland, when we were grateful for a man of the match showing by Heurelho Gomes, who included a penalty save against Darren Bent in his repertoire of valuable saves. Significantly, Aaron Lennon was not fit, and , bearing in mind his superlative efforts in the remaining two games, he is arguably the most significant player in the current Spurs line-up.
Both Gomes and Lennon were contenders for the player of the month, but Jermain Defoe has to come into the reckoning for his stunning five-goal show against a humiliated Wigan side. Defoe was officially just the third Spurs player to score five league goals in a game.
There have been plenty of good performances by a number of players, but the Spurs Odyssey player of the month award goes to Niko Kranjcar who really came to the fore in all three games. Against Sunderland, he replaced Robbie Keane after 63 minutes, and Spurs suddenly looked more balanced and threatening. Kranjcar is tall and upright, with speed, strength and plenty of skill.
Niko wins his tackles, wafts through challenges, makes telling and accurate passes, and has a cracking shot to cap all that skill! His goal against Wigan is testimony to the power of his shot. In that famous Wigan game, Kranjcar was a star as well as Aaron Lennon (scorer and provider), and of course Defoe.
Kranjcar was also voted the Spurs man of the match against Aston Villa, and Harry Redknapp has a real dilemma on his hands when Luka Modric is soon ready to return.
We've now scored 45 goals in 17 games to date, and if our form continues we could break the 100 goal barrier again, as we did two seasons ago.
November's results have been achieved without Modric, with only 59 minutes of Ledley King, with injuries to Lennon, Bassong and Woodgate, and with hardly a look-in for David Bentley, who did play well when he got on against Wigan, and had a goal from an excellent free kick denied because it was (correctly) regarded as an own goal by the unlucky goalkeeper. Internationals such as Gareth Bale and Roman Pavlyuchenko did not appear, but perhaps we will see them at Old Trafford as well as Giovani Dos Santos.
Don't forget to check out the cumulative appearances and grades for the players as the season progresses - below. The grades are based upon a mark out of ten.
