Spurs go up, but players' stock goes down
This article was written before Spurs lost their first November match (at home to Wigan) and dropped to fifth
One big anomaly in October's form guide was the fact that Spurs rose one place to fourth in the Premier League, but as a group, the players' stock went down, in the sense that their cumulative grades for the season so far have fallen. The only two players to break this trend were our wingmen, Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon. Even Jan Vertonghen has suffered worse assessments by the average of 170 voters, despite winning three man of the match votes.
In spite of, or perhaps because of his two match absence on paternity leave, Gareth Bale topped this month's ratings, missing two matches in which the team as a whole was graded fairly poorly. Gareth was the clear man of the match in our last game of October against Norwich, partly thanks to his fourth goal of the season in all competitions.
Gareth has some ground to make up on Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele, who head the ratings for the season to date. Dembele is "top of the pops" now, but he has missed the last four games, and it looks as if he will miss a few more too.
Dembele's absence will be sorely felt, and we need him back in action as soon as possible, especially with no less than seven games to come in November. Dempsey and Sigurdsson just aren't cutting the mustard so far in the eyes of Spurs Odyssey voters, and let's face it, they are not wrong. Dempsey scored a quite disastrous 4.5 after his penalty failure against Norwich, and both he and Sigurdsson are averaging less than 6 out of 10 in all matches played.
Aaron Lennon had a good month though, scoring his first goal of the season in the win over Aston Villa, and being voted the Spurs man of the match in that game and against Chelsea. Aaron has also captained the side twice more this month to add to the first such occasion against Lazio at home in September.
We won two of our three league games, which allowed us to climb above Everton, who drew all three of their league games this month. We also sit two points above Arsenal, who we have to play at The Emirates in a very busy November, which features no less than 7 games, 5 of which are in the league.
We've been missing Younes Kaboul since Day One at Newcastle. We have yet to see Scott Parker in action. Benoit Assou-Ekotto has also been missing since 1st September, and Adebayor has yet to start a game. Add to those absences the Dembele injury, and you have to say that we are doing rather well really to be fourth in the league, and still in the running to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Europa League.
Things can only get better really, especially if we get two or three of those players back sooner rather than later, and players such as Sigurdsson, Dempsey, and Kyle Walker can find their true form.
