October 2019

Spurs played some sensational football in October!

It would be easy to dwell on the gloom of our only defeat this month which we suffered in the last game away to Royal Antwerp. Jose Mourinho made 9 changes for this game following our win at Burnley, and said he learnt a lot from the defeat. I think he realised he can no longer make such wholesale changes for any one game, except perhaps for a genuinely low profile match.

Our progress from Group J of the Europa League ought to be assured and we could still win the group.

It is better to focus upon the fact that Spurs opened the month of October by playing sensational football. You could even call it Powerplay. At the time of writing we are the Premier League's top scorers. Until the last 10 minutes of the West Ham game we were flying. Remember also that we rose to fifth place - now sixth until we play tomorrow. (Sunday 1st November)

Maccabi Haifa were dispatched comfortably (7-2) before a marvellous never to be forgotten 6-1 win at Old Trafford. We went 3-0 up against the "Hammers" in 16 minutes. Everyone has run out of superlatives regarding Kane and Son, both of whom have scored 10 club goals so far. Both lead our players' grades chart and Harry is our player of the month. (Son won the Premier League Player of the Month award) The Kane and Son partnership has become one of the best in the history of the Premier League. They won't be missing the start of a game like Antwerp away again!

"Sonny" scored 5 goals in October and led the Premier League scorers' list going into this weekend's round of games.

The loan signing (with a view to purchase) of Carlos Vinicius from Benfica was announced at the beginning of the month. Harry Kane started the month with a hat-trick against Maccabi Haifa and scored 7 goals in all games he played. With the signing of Vinicius who made his debut against LASK, Mourinho had the luxury of keeping a fit Kane unused on the bench. That hasn't happened since the 6-1 win over Rochdale in February 2018!

The transfer window for signings from Championship clubs was later than that for the Premier League and Europe. Joe Rodon was signed (from Swansea) too late to be included in our Europa League squad list. Joe made a brief debut at the end of the Burnley game. Paulo Gazzaniga and Gedson Fernandes were not included in that squad. All three are in the Premier League squad although Gedson was squeezed in as a young player. Danny Rose remains on the club books, but is not on either squad list. Danny's last game for Spurs was against Liverpool in January, before he spent the rest of the season on loan with Newcastle.

Gareth Bale made his second Spurs debut when he came on against West Ham, but he is still looking for optimum fitness, and has yet to score this time around. He won't be an automatic first team choice just yet.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is proving to be a vital cog in Spurs' wheel already. He played a part in each of our games this month. He gives strength in front of the defence, and is not shy at offering useful passes towards the front either. Tanguy Ndombele is growing into his role behind a front three or four.

In Amazon's "All or Nothing" series on Spurs Jose Mourinho famously told his team that sometimes on the football pitch his players had to be "c***s". It might come as a surprise to you all that in 6 games played this month there was just one Spurs booking, and that was for Erik Lamela at Old Trafford. Maybe we need to get a little nastier sometimes!

Jack Clarke was given a brief debut in the LASK game and with 12 players allowed on the bench for European games he, Harvey White, and Dennis Cirkin are being given some more exposure to the first team experience.

Juan Foyth has gone to Villarreal on a season-long loan and scored on his debut there. Ryan Sessegnon has gone on a similar arranement to TSG Hoffenheim and is getting game time. Ryan played 90 minutes on Thursday night against KAA Gent.
