Meet the record breakers!

The record that Spurs broke with Wednesday night's 85,011 Wembley attendance for a home club game had been held for no less than 78 years 6 months by the 75,038 crowd who crammed into White Hart Lane for an FA Cup quarter-final against tomorrow's visitors Sunderland on Saturday 5th March, 1938. Unfortunately, as happened on Wednesday, Spurs also lost that 1938 game thanks to a solitary goal by the great Sunderland hero Raich Carter. Carter's name was still much revered when I was in my boyhood. Carter was born in Sunderland on 21st December 1913, and played for the Wearsiders in the 1930s, during which time Sunderland last won the league title, and when they won the FA Cup in 1937 against Preston North End. Carter scored one of the cup winning goals too in a 3-1 win. The next time Sunderland would win the FA Cup was 1973 with that historic win over "Mighty Leeds" with Bob Stokoe at the helm.

Another record relating to Sunderland involving Spurs is the fact that we have our best points per game ratio against this team in 30 Premier league games. Spurs average 2.166 points every time we meet this team, now managed by David Moyes. Another team formerly managed by the Scot is third on the list. Moyes' Everton had to regard Spurs as a bogey team during his reign, although in his latter years in charge their record improved. Moyes must have been suffering on Monday night when his new team were beaten 3-0 by his old team. This scoreline was an exact reverse of that which secured Sunderland's survival in match 37 last season, when Sam Allardyce led the North-East side to Premier League survival with one game remaining. Since leaving Everton, Moyes has had a chequered career, to say the least, with Manchester United and Real Sociedad in Spain. Earlier this season Moyes warned his squad that they faced another relegation battle. The early signs are that he is right, although they started the season with various injury problems involving key players.

Those who watched Monday night's Sunderland - Everton match on Sky Tv will have seen Sunderland's brave 5 year old mascot Bradley Lowery. Bradley won a previous fight against neuroblastoma, which is a rare type of cancer affecting babies and young children, but sadly has suffered remission. His family, supported by The Hartlepool Round Table needed to raise £700,000 to pay for treatment not available in this country. Everton FC have pledged £200,000, and the fund has now reached its target figure. Bradley's family still needs more money to cover costs and possible complications but has also stated that any excess money raised will be passed on to other families with similar needs. I urge you to help this worthy cause here - http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=bradleysfight.

Sunderland have not won a league game in August and September in 23 attempts. Last year it was late October before they managed such a win. That was a 3-0 against Newcastle (who they had beaten in 6 consecutive meetings), when a certain Adam Johnson scored from the spot. His last goal was in his last game in February this year against Liverpool. Johnson is now playing elsewhere, of course. You have to go back to September 29th 2012 for "The Black Cats" last early season league win, and that was against Wigan.

Spurs have won 9 of their last 12 games against Sunderland, who last beat us 6 years ago at The Stadium of Light, and a full 8 years ago at White Hart Lane. We won at home and away last season, and when we beat them 4-1 in January, Allardyce's team were looking doomed. Christian Eriksen (2), Mousa Dembele and Harry Kane were our goalscorers. This was Dembele's last goal for us, not that he scores many. Dembele is of course back in the frame for selection, having served his 6 match suspension. Having come on at half time against Monaco, and impressing, Mousa could start this game, releasing Dele Alli to his suited advanced and attacking role.

We met Sunderland in match 5 of last season's programme Sunderland 0-1 Spurs, but it was away from home. Ryan Mason scored the Spurs winner, and that was his last league goal for Tottenham too. Ryan has yet to make his full debut for Hull since his transfer, but he did get off the bench at Burnley last week.

David Moyes has been struck by injuries to key players early in the season. Goalkeeper Vito Mannone was struck by an elbow injury in August and is out till mid-December. Sebastian Larsson suffered a cruciate knee injury and is out till February. Sunderland stalwart (and referees' card magnet) Lee Cattermole had a hernia op and has yet to play this season, but may be available this week. Striker Franco Borini has a groin injury and is also out till December. Victor Anichebe was signed from West Brom, but he too has yet to appear, and there is no return date for him as yet. Former Spur Younes Kaboul was allowed to leave and moved south to Watford for "personal reasons".

Moyes has brought in one-time Spur and former Everton man Steven Pienaar and has Man Utd player Adnan Januzaj on loan. Jermain Defoe, who captained the side in Monday night's game, will be 34 next month, but he was a major force in Sunderland's survival last season, hitting 15 Premier League goals. That was Jermain's second-highest Premier League return behind his 18 for Spurs in the 2009-10 season. Jermain's positive welcome tomorrow is assured, not least because of his 91 Premier League goals for Spurs, and because he remains the fifth highest Spurs goalscorer in all competitions (143).

Mauricio Pochettino has promised some rotation, but surely major changes will be saved till Wednesday night's EFL Cup game against Gillingham. Danny Rose is not likely to return to his left back position until next week-end at the earliest, and I don't see the back four changing tomorrow. Our manager will assess the fitness of his players in today's light training session.

This is a game that Spurs have to win to maintain their top four credentials, and I have it down as a banker home win by 2-0. Such a result would put Spurs above both Chelsea and Liverpool, after "The Reds"' 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge last night. If Everton and/or Man Utd slip up our position could be even better, but the win is the thing!

COME ON YOU SPURS!

Match referee Mike Dean is now 48, and seems to have been around The Premier League for ages. He has been the "man in black" (various colours these days!) for Spurs games more than any other current referee. Mr. Dean's last game in charge of Spurs was our 3-0 home win against Manchester United in April. A repeat of that scoreline would be most welcome tomorrow!

· Reviewing Spurs' last Champions League Season - 2010-11. 6 years ago, on this date, Spurs beat Wolves 3-1. Alan Hutton scored his last Spurs goal at White Hart Lane, although he did score once more at Bolton that season. We also remembered Bobby Smith on this day six years ago.
