John Ellis is known to many Spurs fans and we have no less than 444 mutual friends on Facebook. Hopefully we will have more after the publication of this second and unique eye-witness report on the fabulous game we had on Tuesday night at The Bernebeu.
John invariably comments after every Spurs game on his Facebook page, and I usually agree with everything he writes. That applies to John's detailed eye-witness report on this week's game, which is published below, with kind permission:-
Real Madrid 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur
We came, we saw, we didn't quite conquer but my, we went mighty close.
This will hopefully be remembered as the night this young Spurs team came of age and for different reasons possibly as pivotal as Kendall getting that result at Oxford with Everton and Ferguson at Forest with United all those years ago. In other words. A prelude to going on to win trophies...
For those not aware, before Tuesday night, of Real Madrid's last 23 home games in the Champions League, they had won 21 and drawn 2. That was the size of the task ahead of this young Spurs side missing a number of players who were this time last season nailed on as first team starters at kick off - Rose, Wanyama, Dembele, Dele and Lamela and the reserve left back this time last season, Davies was also not available through illness.
Last season, it was argued we had the best first 11 but our squad lacked sufficient quality to sustain a challenge in all four competitions.
This is now no longer the case.
Picking Trippier or Aurier is a horses for courses choice. Davies has developed into such a quality left back, it will be fascinating to see how he and Rose will improve each other's level in the competition for a place in the team.
The signing of Sanchez plus Dier's versatility has created many more options for the manager and enabled us not to be unduly weakened by Vertongen covering at left back.
This time last season Dembele not being in the team was a massive loss. With the emergence of Winks, the choice of which two between Dier, Wanyama, Dembele and Winks is almost an irrelevance.
Sissoko'a improvement is nothing short of remarkable and provides us with an additional and different type of attacking midfield player alongside the silkier skills of Eriksen, Dele, Lamela and the pace and trickery of Son and GKN.
The bringing in of a big game player in Llorente must have been massive in the dressing room last night. Would Poch have been able to adopt the formation and tactics of last night without him - I suspect not.
With regards to the match itself, the opening phase of the game saw Spurs lacking their normal composure and yet still looking very threatening in the attacking third. How Real missed the early chance when from the angle I was at a goal seemed a certainty, I will only fully appreciate when watching game again on TV.
Then admittedly from high up in the away end at the opposite end to the action, it seemed Llorente should have been awarded a penalty and the players reactions appeared to substantiate that. However giving a penalty to the away side in the Bernabeu at 0-0 is almost akin to giving one at Old Trafford when Ferguson was manager - it just doesn't and didn't happen.
As the game progressed, Spurs visibly grew in confidence and to go one nil up in the Santiago Bernabeu was a moment to savour and a moment to remember. Aurier did really well for his role in our goal but just when it looked as though we would see it through to half time, he showed too much arrogance on the ball and was punished twice - in losing possession and again in diving in an attempt to retrieve the situation which resulted in the penalty equaliser.
That apart, other than giving a needless free kick away far up the pitch which could have led to a calamitous booking, he played very well and was more than a match for Marcelo. It will be an intriguing match up when they recommence hostilities at Wembley in two weeks time.
Aurier's partnership with Sissoko is developing well and could well become a feature of our play.
Hugo Lloris proved his doubters wrong with what can only be described as a sensational performance. A number of Hugo's saves were of the highest order and a couple almost denied belief. The Spanish newspapers were raving about Lloris after the game and to be fair also about Navas - calling them "walls".
There were though heroes all over the park and to come away with a result - there had to be!
Jan did so well in the left back position, keeping his eyes on the ball in the face of Ronaldo's fabulous ball skills down the wing as did Toby when Ronaldo came inside. I need to see the passport of Sanchez! Is he really only 21 years of age? His performance was full of maturity, discipline and composure. The potential of this young man is enormous. So much for the old rule of never buying a South American centre back!
And Eric Dier is having a great season. Prone to the odd mistake but is our silent assassin who goes about his business with aggressive and yet quiet authority, doing the dirty work which can often go unnoticed.
Then we have Harry Winks who I don't think has even started ten proper first team matches yet and yet is already looking indispensable in the key role with at the heart of the midfield. Last night he was at the fulcrum of our play - always available to receive the pass and almost aways accurate in his own passing game. He made one error which but for Hugo would have led to Ronaldo scoring and that would have been a shame as his performance was so good. He is rapidly becoming our go to player for linking the play. He was our Modric, our Iniesta. What is even more pleasing is that he is one of our own and living the dream of being a Spurs fan since the day he was born, living in a Spurs mad family.
And what of Modric... Modric the man will always be tainted by his Chelsea affair which in my opinion was far more nuclear than that of Danny Rose. Modric the player... what a player. The leader of the Real Madrid orchestra. A truly gifted footballer who today is up there as the best midfield player in the World.
Last night, he found space, coaxed and cajoled his team forward, encouraged his team mates to make runs in the certain knowledge, the ball would arrive at their feet at just the right weight of pass and angle to create maximum threat on our goal. With his appreciation of the game and two footed ability to go either way, he found time and space where there wasn't any. He is truly a wonderful footballer to watch and I hope Croatia qualify for the World Cup as it would be a crying shame for him not to be seen on the highest of stages. As for Wembley... a slight knock to rule him out wouldn't go amiss ??.
Thank you Daniel Levy for not buckling to the pressure for him to go to Chelsea. You saved our hearts from being broken.
An indication of the level of performance we were up against is shown in the statistics of Tony Kroos who made I believe 88 passes with a 99% success rate - as close to perfection as is surely possible in such a massive game.
Fortunately with Barcelona scouts in attendance, Christian Eriksen was not at his best last night and other than a couple of moments of class was often on the periphery of the action. Hopefully, Barcelona will soon sign Coutinho and end such talk as Eriksen has said on more than one occasion that it would be impossible to turn them down...
Further forward, what a shock to see us start with Llorente alongside Kane. Without being spectacular, he could have had a penalty assist and an open play assist with his pass to Kane. He certainly took the weight of Kane's shoulders and stopped Ramos and co marauding forward without taking care to leave themselves over exposed at the back. A masterstroke from Pochettino which must have disappointed Son as much as Trippier at also not being given the nod.
This wasn't the last of the shocks.. Danny Rose coming on for the last 15 minutes and in midfield after being out for eight months. The Spurs fans sang his name and again at the end of the match during his warm down. Let's put his foolishness behind us for the rest of this season and get behind him and the team. We have a squad capable of sustaining a serious challenge in all four competitions and I include the Champions League in that after last night. We need Danny Rose and all of us to be positive and let's see where it takes us. No good will come from booing him - if at the end of the season he goes, let's save our boos until he turns up to play against us rather than when he plays for us.
Finally Harry Kane.. what a man, what a player. He didn't give the Real defence a moment's rest and but for the outstretched arm of Navas who pulled off a great save and shortly after from Eriksen, we would have conquered.
Finally (Ed:again!)to the man, Mauricio Pochettino. He came of age last night. On big games gone by, he has occasionally let himself down with poor team selection and tactics. Last night everything he touched turned to gold but then again as the song goes.... He's magic you know!
Last and by no means least, the final piece of the jigsaw, our fans. Yes, is we were magnificent throughout the whole 90 minutes. No plastic orchestrated cheerleaders standing in front of us a la Dortmund, no dress code... just us and our passion. Spurs fans at the other end of the stadium in the home end said they could hear us. The only time I could hear Madrid was when they scored and when there was a crescendo of whistles because we were retaining possession so well at times that they couldn't get the ball back.
There are big matches ahead but the belief the players must have gained from last night must be massive. Let's hope we can now go on to win away at the top six as well as in Dortmund.
This group isn't over yet but Dortmund are likely to need to win all three of their remaining games. Let's get a result at home to Real and keep them interested in their final game against Dortmund.
Just landed after a fantastic trip with great friends and for once the match wasn't the worst part!
