On this day - 6th April, 2005.
Once again we dip into one of the more obscure reports in our archive which stretches back to 1997 (and beyond when you consider our many feature articles).
This is a report from April 2005 when Spurs Reserves played Derby County. We had reserve teams until 2009 when I recall Harry Redknapp chose to end our participation in a competition which would ultimately be replaced by Premier League Two.
In this match we beat Derby 5-2 with goals by El Hamdaoui, Lee Barnard (3), and Hallfredsson. Our team was captained by Goran Bunjevcevic.
Mounir El Hamdaoui was born in Rotterdam and played under-21 football for The Netherlands. He had Moroccan nationality and played his senior International football for the North African country. Mounir came to Spurs from Dutch side Excelsior with whom he finished his career last season (2018/19). Mounir also spent a couple of seasons on Fiorentina's books, including the 2014/15 season when we played them, but he did not feature in either of the Europa League games against Spurs.
Like El Hamdaoui, Emil Hallfredsson did not appear in the Spurs first team. Emil, now 35 is playing in Italy, currently on Padova's books. Hallfredsson has been based in Italy with several clubs since 2007, but he did spend the 2009/10 season on loan with Barnsley in the Championship. Hallfredsson has had a successful international career with Iceland and has 71 caps, but he did not play in Iceland's Euro 2016 win over England.
I personally had great hopes for Lee Barnard who was a prolific scorer for Spurs at Youth and Reserve level. Lee's only first team appearances for Spurs were as substitute in three Premier League games towards the end of the 2005/06 season. Lee subsequently played for several clubs making most of his league appearances for Southend and Southampton. His statistics of 37 goals in 97 league games for Southend offer his best figures.
Lee is another 35 year old now and was last recorded as playing for Maldon & Tiptree in 2018/19.
The world of football was shocked in June 2018 to hear of the passing of Goran Bunjevcevic. In his last season at Spurs (2005-06) Goran did not feature in the first team, but I do recall that he mentored a successful reserve side, playing for most of the season.
Another member of the Spurs Reserve side in that April 2005 game was Czech player David Limbersky, who came to us on loan from Victoria Plzen with whom he has spent most of his career. 36-year-old Limbersky still plays (at full back these days) and has scored 22 goals in 391 league games for his hometown club. He also has 39 senior caps for his country.
Derby's Lionel Ainsworth made just two substitute appearances for the Midlands club in 2006. At the end of a long career in lower league and Scottish football, Ainsworth is currently playing for Dulwich Hamlet and scored in their last game in the National League (South) in a 2-1 win against Hemel Hempstead.
