Martin Jol has managed to achieve only half of his objectives for this stage of the season. He said before the start that he wanted to ensure qualification for the Second Round of the UEFA Cup, which has been done thanks to two workmanlike performances against Slavia Prague, against whom we have scored our only goals of the month.

The other objective was to get a good start in the Premiership, and we know what a disaster that has been for us so far. We've had three away defeats (Bolton, Man Utd and Liverpool) and only managed to beat Sheffield United in August on home turf. The argument goes (and I susbcribe to it really) that losses at the three venues we have visited will not be disastrous in the context of the season, but we must hope to start putting things right really soon!

Ironically, our defence has looked really solid for most of the month. Robbo failed to hold that early Ronaldo free kick at Old Trafford, letting Giggs score, but then we deserved at least a point for our battle for the remaining 82 minutes of the game. The 0-0 at home to Fulham was frustrating, but we did have loads of chances. Then the Anfied game turned on a sixpence after Jenas's simple miss.

Slavia Prague then has been a welcome distraction, and we look forward to the draw for the next stage, being made on Tuesday October 3rd. By that time, I sincerely hope we have given our Premiership season a kick-start against a Portsmouth side that will include a man we love to hate, and several other players with a history relevant to Spurs!

Pascal Chimbonda made his debut at Old Trafford and has quickly impressed the Spurs fans with his game, bringing strength, skill and guile at the back, and in support of the attack, who sadly HAVE let us down again! Chimbonda wins my Player of the Month award.
