Solid start for Nuno

The fact that Spurs' new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo was nominated for his fourth manager of the month award tells you plenty about the first playing month at his new club. Nuno was nominated alongside Rafa Benitez, David Moyes and Thomas Tuchel. All are unbeaten, but as Spurs are the only team with three wins in three league games, the result should be a "no-brainer". Stop press - Nuno was confirmed as manager of the month on 10th September!

With Wolves, Nuno predominantly played three at the back, but like any decent coach he has always been willing to change. He seemed to be setting out his intended style for Spurs in the pre-season programme with a 4-3-3. Obviously some of our International personnel arrived late, but Dele Alli thrived in a new role on the left of a midfield three. Dele started all three of our league games, as did Oliver Skipp, who seems to have muscled up during his season on loan with Norwich, when he was selected as a member of the Championship team of the season.

In some of those pre-season games, with Harry Kane arriving back at the club late and his future uncertain, a front three of Lucas Moura, Son and Bergwijn was deployed. Only once Kane's future at the club was determined (at least for another season) did the unfortunate Lucas Moura make way. Goals have been hard to come by, but three 1-0 league wins have put us on top of the league, with Arsenal at the bottom. This has led to much mirth among Spurs fans. Nobody pretends we are going to stay top for long, with a crunch game against title challengers Chelsea to come on September 19th.

We will need to show more ceative spark in midfield. Tanguy Ndombele was not involved in any friendlies, or our competitive programme so far. It was thought he would be sold, but he stays, and we must assume he will be rehabilitated into the squad.

Our defence clearly has to take massive credit for their three clean sheets and our record so far. Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have appeared rejuvenated. Davinson obviously benefited from his success with Colombia in the Copa America tournament when his team reached the third-place play-off. Eric is in his eigth season now and is a veteran of 205 Premier league appearances. Eric is one of our senior players in terms of current European appearances for the club (46), behind only Lloris, Kane, Son and Davies of the current squad and level with Dele Alli. Eric has been nominated for the EA Sports Premier league player of the month award competing with Alonso, Antonio, Benrahma, Gray and Greenwood for that accolade.

22-year-old Japhet Tanganga has also played all three Premier League games and was a very impressive man of the match in our opening day win over Manchester City. That performance, where he held both Grealsh and Sterling at bay and found time to impress at the other end, together with his consistency against Wolves and Watford, was enough to secure him our first player of the month award.

The only blemish on Nuno's August was his decision to send a weak team to Portugal for our first leg of the Europa Conference League game against Pacos de Ferreira, which we lost 1-0. All was redeemed with a comfortable home win, courtesy of two Kane goals, and we did progress to the group stage of this third-tier competition.
