Downward trend in December

We started the month of December at the top of our league and for a week at least we could say we were top of our domestic and European Group League tables after we beat Arsenal and Royal Antwerp. Our path to the Round of 32 had been secured before that last game, but beating Antwerp assured us of being seeded for the first knock-out game to be played in February against Austrian outfit Wolfsberger.

We also beat Stoke in our Carabao Cup quarter-final and will meet Brentford next week in the semi-final. What with a helpful FA Cup Third Round draw against eighth tier Marine, you'd think everything in the Spurs garden was rosy, but that Arsenal win was our one league win of the month in which we lost two consecutive league games for the first time since last February/March and drew twice. We lost our lead and now sit seventh.

Four of our games could be played in front of Covid- permitted crowds of 2,000, but the increase in Tiers has put paid to that benefit for players and fans alike. To cap it all, our last scheduled game against Fulham had to be postponed because of Covid issues in the Fulham camp and we join seven other teams who are at least one game behind the majority in terms of those played. Vaccines have been approved and are coming, but it will be a long time yet before we can look forward to attending games in numbers, I fear. Should we beat Brentford in the Carabao Cup semi-final, that final has been put back to April 25th in the hope that more fans will be able to attend.

Like the win against Manchester City and goal-less draw at Chelsea in November, our win against Arsenal was achieved with less possession than the opposition and the desire to defend and counter-attack. Ultimately, such negative tactics did not work at Selhurst Park, Anfield or Molineux and we were out-played at home by Leicester. Fans' patience has been thoroughly tested, if not quite lost yet. An upturn will be required in January.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who played in 7 of our 8 games, was our player of the month, but as a result of the downward trend in results, the performance levels of players and manager alike have dipped.

Son has scored 4 goals and Kane added 3 goals to his tally. Both remain high in the list of Premier League goalscorers. Gareth Bale scored goals against LASK and Stoke, but he has not reached the levels of fitness or performance that some hoped for (unrealistically in my view) and will be absent for a few weeks now with a calf injury.

One blessing of the Fulham postponement is some additional rest for our players before a difficult Saturday lunchtime appointment with high-scoring and high-energy Leeds United.

Let's hope for a Happy New Year for our beloved club! I also wish you and your loved ones a healthy 2021. It has to be better for us all, doesn't it?
