That's progress!
Unbeaten in the month of November, winning five and drawing one of their six games?
Keeping a clean sheet against two of their main rivals for the Premier League title?
Climbing from 6th to 1st place in the Premier League in a month?
Being regarded as contenders for the Premier league title after 10 games played?
13 places and 8 points above Arsenal?
These are all signs of genuine progress by Jose Mourinho’s Spurs. We’ve won five consecutive games in November (two of which were against Ludogorets in the Europa league). It hasn’t always – alright it hasn’t often – been pretty, but we’ve come through the first phase of a difficult set of league fixtures on top of the league, and we can surely approach our next league game at home to Arsenal with great confidence.
It's been a full year since we’ve been unbeaten in a calendar month. In November last year we were unbeaten in Mauricio Pochettino’s last three games. His problem was that two of those games were disappointing draws against Everton and Sheffield United, and that we slipped to 14th place after 12 games. Jose won his first three games, but we conceded two goals in each of those games. By the turn of the year we had climbed to sixth place. Now look where we are!
Jose has continued to make good use of the very strong squad which he has at his disposal. Although we lost Toby Alderweireld to injury late in the Manchester City game, he should be back soon. The only other absentee of note has been Erik Lamela, whose use is more one of being an impactive substitute. He too will not be missing for long.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has played in every game (twice as substitute), demonstrating his importance to the manager and his team. Tanguy Ndombele has also played in every game, starting five times this month. His close-quarter dribbling and control skills have been something to behold.
Gareth Bale is still being eased in. He scored his first goal since his second debut against Brighton. That proved to be the all-important winning goal too.
Harry Kane scored three of our 12 goals this month but continues to win wide acclaim for his excellent contributions all over the field of play, making vital defensive interventions as well as creativity and scoring skills. This month’s landmark goals for Kane were his 200th club goal away to Ludogorets and then his 150th Premier League goal (and what a vital one it was) away to West Brom. Unsurprisingly, Harry was our player of the month for a second time, and he currently leads our accumulated ratings for the season (see below)
Joe Rodon made his club debut very briefly last month at Burnley. Joe had ten minutes at the end of the Man City game when Toby had to go off and was then thrown in at the deep end at Stamford Bridge where he played generally well, with a couple of nervy blemishes from which he will learn. Another debutant was young goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman who got 10 minutes at the end of the home game against Ludogorets and had more to do than had Joe Hart who came off. Carlos Vinicius scored his first two club goals in that game too. Harry Winks scored his first club goal since January 2019 in this game. It was sensational in nature, but Harry admitted the 50+ yard effort had been intended as a pass for Gareth Bale. Jose said he should have claimed the goal as deliberate!
Jose Mourinho won the November Premier League manager of the month award. It was his fourth such award. Jose commended his staff saying "It says Manager of the Month but for me it is team of the month or staff of the month".
December brings us no less than 9 more games. We will conclude our Europa League Group J schedule which should see us safely to the Round of 32 (Real Madrid anyone?), and a Carabao Cup quarter-final at Stoke. Our home game against Arsenal will see the return of paying fans albeit only 2,000. As I live in a Tier 3 area I am not permitted to travel, so I will have to settle for a TV view for the time being.
