Don't judge Spurs on March alone
They say that March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb. Well, after the glory of Wembley in February, Spurs played like lambs at the beginning, middle and end of March, with only three notable performances at home to West Ham and Chelsea, and in the last of their 19 Cup games this season at Eidnhoven, where despite victory on the night over 120 minutes, we succumbed in the penalty shoot-out. We were certainly slaughtered like lambs in the final game of the month at home to Newcastle.
This month, over 8 games, Spurs have a negative goal difference for the first time under the reign of Juande Ramos, and since October this season. Significantly, we conceded 4 goals in three of our games this month, and despite the heroics against Chelsea, such a defensive record is not acceptable. Our performance guide says that we have not been as bad as this since the start of the season.
It is not right to judge Spurs on their March performances though. It was inevitable that the players would switch off after Wembley, although of course that is not much fun for the paying customers. You and I have witnessed inconsistency by the players, and some failed experimentation by the manager. Whilst Ramos is switching players as much as he can, it is already possible to identify bthose players already being marginalised to a degree. After an inauspicious debut, and despite a redeeming goal in his next game, Gilberto has been consigned to the Reserves, where Chris Gunter is also playing most of his football. Taarabt has been allowed a couple of outings, but Lee and Boateng have hardly featured.
After his return from injury, Michael Dawson has had to face the haarsh reality that he is third choice next to a fit Ledley King and the consistent Woodgate. Ledley is now going to miss the rest of the season to strengthen his knee. Aaron Lennon has been publicly told that more is expected of him.
Despite his likely departure in the summer Pascal Chimbonda is still one of the most used players, alongside Zokora and Malbranque. Three of the best performances this month have come from Dimitar Berbatov (at home against West Ham and away to PSV), and Robbie Keane (at home against Chelsea. Robbie Keane's spectacular equaliser against Chelsea has to be the moment of the month for me.
