David Pleat's honeymoon period as caretaker manager definitely came to an end this month. The fans were prepared to forgive the poor goal-less draw at home to Middlesbrough, but when Jay-Jay Okocha led Bolton to a 1-0 at The Lane on the first day of the month, those clean sheets and promising results were forgotten. The "Spursometer" shows decline in all categories, with score ratio an obvious concern.
There is no doubt that our best performance of the month came in defeat at Higbury, when we really were unlucky to lose, thoroughly deserving at least a point. The truth however is that the other three games in November do truly illustrate our lack of potential to succeed at this level, and it is understandable that the fans are anxious that the club will be involved in a relegation battle this season.
Currently only 4 points and 5 places off the bottom place, Spurs simply MUST take maximum points off Wolves next week, because our chances of any return from St. James' Park and at home to Man Utd are virtually nil. That leaves us hoping for points from a Boxing Day visit to Portsmouth, and a home game against Charlton. I fear that the said relegation battle will be imminent by the turn of the year. Maybe the club and the players will realise it by then, because the level of passion in their game has not been enough to keep us in the Premiership overall.
We know only too well, how much Kanoute is being missed, but there must be a managerial appointment to capture the imagination in the next month, because whoever it is will need to act during the January transfer window, to prevent the continuing slide of THFC into lower league football.
The forthcoming AGM of Tottenham Hotspur PLC on 11th December will be very interesting, as Mr. Pleat has suggested that the club wil be making an important announcement around that time. The Chairman and the Board will have some hard questions to answer, such as just what progress have they made since taking over from Alan Sugar?
...and finally - you can compare this month's figures with Last month , and last year (November 2002).
