Conte's eyes have been opened

It is worth repeating here (and studying) Antonio Conte's comments after our embarrassing defeat against NS Mura:-

"I did not like what happened tonight. I must be honest and tell you that after three-and-a-half weeks, I am starting to understand the situation.

"I am happy to stay here but at the same time I must be honest and tell you we need to work a lot to improve the quality of the squad. We are Tottenham and in this moment, there is an important gap [to the top teams in England].

"If someone thinks that a new coach arrives, and Conte won in the past and then I am a magician... But the only magic I can do is to work. To bring work and work to improve, to bring my methods, my ideas of football. But we have to understand that we need time.

"It is not simple because, in this moment for sure, the level of Tottenham is not so high.

"The situation now is starting to be very clear in my mind. I like to win, and I play to win in every competition. This must be the same for my players.

"This road could be one metre or 100m. I am not scared; I am ready to go and do this path. But at the same time, I want to be very honest - we have to work a lot and improve in many, many aspects.

"The club is outstanding outside - to create a stadium - but now we start from behind. I have found players that want to work and have great commitment, but sometimes it is not enough.

"We need time, but we have to do better in everything, everything, everything."

According to Spurs Odyssey's voters, Conte's coaching performance was significantly better than that of of his predecessor (not hard), but as he has said there is a hard road ahead to improve that of the team.

Hugo Lloris escaped the diabolical ratings given for the Mura game, but played in the other three games this month and was voted our best player this month. Hugo is also leading the ratings for the season so far, but of course it is disappointing to reflect on the fact few of the outfield players are truly impressing so far.

In particular, Harry Kane, who is the only player to have started all four games, managed just one club goal. That was an excellent finish against Mura. Harry scored 7 goals in his two England games and has 8 club goals this season, but he has still only scored once in the Premier League. Even Hojbjerg out-scores him in that respect!

Sergio Reguilon scored his first club goal against Leeds, and in Conte's chosen 3-4-3 style, our first choice wing-backs (Reguilon and Emerson Royal) are generally doing well, but everyone has identified the lack of creativity behind the attack.

Cristian Romero came back injured from International duty and we don't yet know when he might return (hamstring). Romero was shown two yellow cards against Vitesse. The second was at least after half-time, but Ryan Sessegnon blotted his copybook by getting two cards in the first half-hour against Mura. Both players should have a look at Eric Dier's record. Eric has performed quite consistently so far, and has no bookings as yet this season.

We have 9 games to come in December, including crucial games against Rennes and West Ham. Hopefully the players can make progress under their new leadership, and the team can make progress in all competitions. You've got to have a dream!
