The games are coming thick and fast for Spurs now, as we have qualified for the second round League stage of the UEFA Cup, and the Carling Cup has swung into action for those sides in Europe. Having beaten Milton Keynes (resting seven regular first teamers), we are ensured another action packed month in November.
Whilst it is pleasing to report an unbeaten record in our 6 games this month, and a climb up to mid-table, we are all waiting for our team to really kick into gear against top class opposition.
The 2-0 win in Istanbul against Besiktas was of course notable, and easily the best reult of the month. However, Spurs have failed to give us a convincing performance in the League, and still have to win an away Premiership game, and even score a goal for ourselves. (Angel scored our only away goal at Villa Park!)
The month started with controversy, as Didier Zokora was shown by TV evidence to have thrown himself down in the penalty area under Pedro Mendes' challenge, which made no contact. It is interesting to note that Mendes got away with a handball on the line for Pompey last week-end against Reading.
After a creditable draw at Villa Park, where we were the better team for much of the game, our boys got that heroic win against Besiktas, which led to the Turkish fans applauding Spurs man of the match Dimitar Berbatov off the pitch, and then the Spurs team at the end of the game. We made harder work than necessary of The Hammers, and suffered a bit of pressure at Vicarage Road last Saturday. There was also the "Count Defoe" saga for Spurs' publicity machine to fight away!
Whilst our strikers are at last finding the net, I feel that the defence deserves special mention, with 4 consecutive clean sheets. Danny Murphy and Tom Huddlestone have made strong contributions this month too. You never know, I might be able to mention Steed Malbranque as a Spurs participant at the end of November!
