October 2006

There is no question about who is the Spurs Player of the Month for October, 2007. That title has to go to stand-in skipper Robbie Keane who has scored 7 goals in the 7 matches the team played during the month. Robbie started as substitute in two of those games too. It was only when he and Gareth Bale were brought on in Cyprus that we managed to make our presence truly felt. Gareth Bale is really the only other Spurs player to have emerged with real credit so far this season, and we have missed him since he went off early at Newcastle too.

All in all, Robbie Keane has now scored 9 goals in his last 10 matches, after a slow start and 16 games so far this season. Thus he has continued his top scoring form since the start of this calendar year, in which he has notched up 26 more goals in his Spurs career, that entered its sixth season this term.

Robbie has now scored 71 Premier League goals in 172 league appearances for Spurs, and a total of 93 goals in 216 competitive appearances. Assuming he serves out his contract, and at the rate he is maintaining, Keane is sure to break into the top ten Spurs scorers of all time.

I have started on that positive note this month, because there is not a lot else that we can say about October that cheers up Spurs fans. We recorded our first win of the month on the last day, against lesser opposition, and that was not convincing. It was new coach Juande Ramos's first game in charge, after the debacle of Martin Jol's departure, about which plenty has been written and continues to be written elsewhere.

The month started with the commemorative game (125 years) against Aston Villa, when we came back from 4-1 down to record a momentous draw. The only other event to crow about is that we led at Anfield until added time before having to settle for a draw. Crucial goals have now been conceded late in no less than five games - two this month (Liverpool and Blackburn)

We have just five games in the month to come, and only one of those a home league game (against Wigan). It is imperative that Juande Ramos gets us off to a winning start at Middlesbrough tomorrow to start the rise towards respectability in the League Table. As written elsewhere, I feel confident that he will do just that.

Don't forget to check out the cumulative appearances and grades for the squad below.
