Might in May

In April, when we beat Newcastle 5-1, my headline was "Spurs have the whiff of Champions League in their nostrils". Then, after a 4-0 trouncing of Aston Villa on their turf, I wrote "The dream is on!" The cautious headline for last month’s review was "Not so optimistic now" after a home defeat to Brighton and a goalless draw at Brentford.

However, like a thoroughbred colt, Spurs have timed their run well, displaying "Might in May" with four wins and a highly honourable draw at Anfield. Indeed, Liverpool’s loss of those two points ultimately cost them the Premier League title as they finished one point behind Manchester City. Spurs completed an excellent return against the Premier League’s two "super-teams," beating City twice and drawing both games against Liverpool. City’s only other league defeat was at home to Palace in October. We remain a bogey team to Manchester City despite Sheik Mansour’s investment.

We had a comfortable win against a Leicester side who were thinking about their Europa Conference semi-final against trophy winners Roma. "Sonny" scored the first two of six goals this month. He would share the Golden Boot with Mo Salah, who had the benefit of five penalties in his 23-goal tally. It was a magnificent end to a fantastic season for Son, whose final goal (our fifth) at Norwich on the last day was stupendous. Son was our player of the month and scooped up the club’s player of the season awards.

The highlight of the month was, of course, the 3-0 drubbing of Arsenal, who had cried off in January, and who limped away from New White Hart Lane before succumbing to another big crowd atmosphere at St. James Park, Newcastle thus handing back to us control of our Champions League destiny. In accordance with the pre-match display on the South Wall, we "Dared, dreamed and did!"

Before we despatched Norwich to the lower echelon of The Championship, we had a far tougher assignment against Burnley who also took the drop after 6 seasons in the Premier League.

Harry Kane scored 5 of our 13 goals this month (including excellent penalties aganst Arsenal and Burnley), and Dejan Kulusevski sealed his excellent contribution to Spurs since February with two goals at Norwich, one of which competed with Son for Spurs goal of the month and perhaps of the season.

Spurs lost Cristian Romero to injury for the last three games, but Davinson Sanchez stood in admirably, and like the club, bookended the season with three clean sheets to match those with which we began this campaign.

Part of the reason for Spurs’ success has been the settled side and this month 9 players started every one of our five games. They were:- Lloris; Emerson Royal, Dier, Davies, Sessegnon, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Son, and Kane.

Already, there has been good news for Spurs fans because ENIC announced an additional investment of £150 million, which should encourage both Antonio Conte and Harry Kane to stay for at least another year!

Another item of news was a new extended contract awarded to Dane Scarlett, which takes him till 2026. The Spurs Odyssey review of the 2021/22 season will be published in the next few days.

Oh, and by the way - WE ARE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE! (For the sixth time.)
