"A manager who will go down with the greats"

In his last blog for Spurs Odyssey (his 387th in nearly 8 years) Norman Giller wrote:- " I think we are seeing the early impact of a manager who will go down with the greats like Bill Nicholson, Arthur Rowe and Keith 'The General' Burkinshaw."

Such is the impression that has been made by Antonio Conte in only two months and 10 games in charge of Spurs. His only defeat was the disaster in Slovenia, when he gave playing time to players he needed to assess more fully. The only games we have lost this month were two postponed due to Covid and our final Europa Conference League game which was ultimately forfeited, despite the fact our training ground had been closed by the Government and we had players and staff infected by the virus that has so affected our lives for nearly two years.

Joe Rodon had his solitary appearance for Conte in that NS mura game. Conte introduced playing three at the back as soon as he arrived, and in the absence of the still injured Romero (his last game was at Goodison Park in November) our mainstay centre-backs have been (from right to left) Sanchez, Dier and Davies.

Indeed Sanchez and Dier have been two of our four ever-present players this month. The others were Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane. Hugo leads our accumulating marks for the race to be player of the season. Harry Kane has scored three goals this month. Our other leading scorers have been Son (4) and Lucas Moura (3).

The first of Lucas's goals was scored against Norwich, about which I wrote:- "I don’t think I have enthused quite so much about a goal (scored by Lucas Moura) since the days of Jurgen Klinsmann." You might say there have been two astounding comments made this month by your webmaster and his most regular contributor these days. (2021 was the year we lost my good friend Ray Lo)

Oliver Skipp was our player of the month for December. He was man of the match in our first two games, and scored highly in two others. "Ollie" hasn't been booked this month either, having previously attracted the attention of referees 6 times. I've even seen comments suggesting that Skipp will be in the England senior squad next summer. Long may his progress, and that of our team, continue.

We remain seventh in the league, but we have games in hand on most of those around us. We are once again in the race for a top four position. What's more, we beat West ham in the League Cup quarter-final and have a semi-final against Chelsea to look forward to, if that is the right phrase. Indeed, we play Chelsea three times next month, with an away league match as well as that two-legged semi-final. Arsenal have to come to "The Lane" next month too. Let's hope for more progress, and a Happy New Year!
