As we have only lost two matches against Brentford, one in the old
Division 2 and one in the FA Cup during the transitional season of
1945-46, we should be able to enjoy the sight of a home win tonight. Our
recent performances have, by all accounts, been dismal but at least we are
doing better than we have done in some recent seasons. On the other hand,
we have not, on paper, had to play any of the commonly agreed top-6 clubs.
The trouble with a tie like tonight's is that both players and supporters
may well feel that the result is a foregone conclusion and may be tempted
to take a pocket calculator with them in the hope that Rebrov, Ferdinand
and Iversen all notch up hat-tricks. But we all know from bitter past
experience what happens when we start to have expectations of that kind.
We really should have performed better last week despite the awful weather
since Brentford really needed to snatch a home win if only to cheer up
their faithful than in hopes of winning the tie over two legs.
It has often puzzled me why teams like Brentford, Queen's Park Rangers and
Wimbledon have not bothered to pool their resources. All three clubs are
poorly supported, all three rely on finding players to sell in order to
survive and all three have rarely set the world on fire. There are far too
many clubs in the Greater London area. Teams like Brentford ought to
consider finding a partner to pool resources in order to progress. Either
that or they should consider going part-time.
I hope tonight's match is a much better one than last week's dismal
affair. It provides Tottenham with the opportunity to try out some of the
youngsters, particularly as so many of those who go report that Sherwood
is woefully out of form. Perhaps he needs a break to recharge his
batteries or because he's carrying an injury? Whatever happens, the team
tonight *MUST* produce a convincing result. I take them to do so and to
win at least 3-0. I'm usually pessimistic by nature : I make that
prediction, hoping I'm being pessimistic in thinking we will only win 3-0!
Cheers, Brian
