Match Reports
Spurs v Bolton Postponed 26.01.02

When the storm clouds linger over the Lea Valley, they stay for a long time, and referee Steve Dunn inspected the pitch at 1.30 p.m. today, deferring a final decision till the Bolton team arrived. Hence the decision to call today's FA Cup Fourth Round tie was not made till around 2 o'clock after a debate between Dunn, Glenn Hoddle and Sam Allardyce in the penalty area in front of the South Stand, where the surface water was too much for Sam's liking. The referee then decided it would not be safe to start the match, taking into account the prospect of further rain. Ironically, by the time I arrived in Tottenham High Road, the rain had all but stopped, and I even travelled in sunshine back to Hertfordshire!

I feel most sorry for the Bolton fans who now have to face the prospect of a fourth visit to White Hart lane for the replay which has been fixed for Tuesday 5th February, at 7.45 p.m. What is more, that will be their third midweek long distance trip to see their team face Spurs.

On balance, the postponement might be for the better for Spurs, as the team gets a deserved rest after Wednesday night's exertions, and the conditions and the pitch have a chance to improve before Wednesday night's Premiership clash with title challengers Newcastle.
