Spurs won thanks to an Allan Nielsen goal just before half time. Moussa Saib made his debut as a substitute replacing David Ginola with four minutes remaining. Bolton were a poor team and Spurs should have been able to win by more than one goal.

Bolton had an opportunity to score in the first minute when Holdsworth found himself one-on-one with Baardsen. Baardsen brought him down and was perhaps lucky not to concede a penalty and be sent off.

Although Spurs had the better of the first half they could not make it count. Finally just before half time Ginola set up Wilson who played the ball to the incoming Nielsen. He beat Todd before sidefooting a soft shot which trickled past the Bolton defenders and hit the base of the post before rolling into the net. Overall it was a lucky goal but gave Spurs the lead.

Ten minutes into the second half Armstrong was substituted after a collision with the Bolton goalkeeper Branagan. His replacement was Howells and from then on Spurs appeared to have settled for a 1-0 result.

In the seventy seventh minute, a Phillips shot was brilliantly saved by Baardsen who dived to tip the ball past the post for a corner. Saib had a shot for Spurs after coming on but it was saved by Branagan.

Overall Berti was probably the player of the game. This was Bolton's eleventh Premiership game without a victory.
