Andy Booth on loan from Sheffield Wednesday made his debut for Spurs. He
failed to get on the score sheet as Spurs recorded their third consecutive
goalless draw. It was the first scoreless draw between these teams at Upton
Park since 1924. Ian Walker replaced the suspended Neil Sullivan in goal.
West Ham had eliminated Manchester United from the FA Cup in their previous
game.
It was an open game with both sides having chances. Booth did put the ball
in the net from a header but it was disallowed as he was offside. Just
before half time Lampard hit the bar with a header.
Spurs almost took the lead in the second half when Leonhardsen lobbed
Hislop but Tininen managed to clear before it crossed the line, scooping it
over the bar. Walker made a fine save from a Pearce free kick. Towards the
end Di Canio broke clear but shot wide. Overall it was one of Spurs better
away performances.

This was the opening game of the season. West Ham had an advantage in match
fitness as they had been playing in the InterToto Cup already. They
eventually won 1-0 thanks to a Frank Lampard goal just before half time.
Chris Perry and Oyvind Leonhardsen made their debuts for Spurs. Spurs
captain Sol Campbell pulled a muscle and departed after only 27 minutes.
Ian Pearce of West Ham suffered a serious injury in the first half also
after a collision with his team mate and namesake Stuart Pearce.
Shortly after the start Foe hit the bar with a header. Walker made a good
save from Wanchope. Ginola chipped Hislop but the ball landed on top of the
net. West Ham took the lead just before half time when Di Canio beat the
Spurs defence before setting up Lampard who shot past Walker into the left
corner of the net.
Spurs had some chances in the second half without hitting the net. Sherwood
had a free header but put it over the bar. Spurs finished with ten men when
Edinburgh had to go off injured after all three substitutes had been used.
Overall West Ham were the better team.

West Ham won thanks to two goals from Trevor Sinclair. Baardsen was
responsible for one of the West Ham goals. Luke Young made his debut for
Spurs and had a fine game.
West Ham started well and Campbell made several good interceptions in the
opening minutes. Iversen had a good opportunity from a Ginola cross but
headed straight at Hislop. West Ham opened the scoring after 39 minutes.
Lampard had a shot which Baardsen saved but could not hold and Sinclair had
the simplest of chances to score.
West Ham doubled their lead immediately after the second half started.
Sinclair ran on to Kitson's through ball before hitting a powerful shot
into the top corner of the net. Then Carr cleared a Ruddock header off the
goalline. With eighteen minutes remaining Spurs scored when Armstrong
headed home a Ginola corner.
Three minutes later Young received the ball following a corner and hit a
strong shot which bounced off the bar. Baardsen made a couple of good saves
from Lampard and Kitson before the end. The victory elevated West Ham to
second place in the Premiership table.

This was the second game of the season. Spurs lost for the second time with
a somewhat dire performance.
Spurs conceded an early goal from a Steve Carr error. Lazaridis came down
the left wing and easily beat Carr before crossing for Hartson to side-foot
the ball home after only four minutes. Spurs suffered further misfortune
when Campbell was injured and departed after seventeen minutes. Walker made
two good saves to stop West Ham from going further ahead tipping over
headers from Hartson and Kitson. Miklosko saved from Iversen and Nielsen
before the interval.
After an hour Carr and Berkovic had a tussle which eventually involved most
of the other players on the pitch.
West Ham went two up after seventy minutes when Lazaridis set up Berkovic
who placed the ball in the far corner of the net. Vega should have got to
the ball before Berkovic. With seven minutes to go Ferdinand scored his
first goal for Spurs converting Sinton's cross. Before the end Lampard hit
the bar for West Ham and Vega had a shot saved by Miklosko.

West Ham won an entertaining game 4-3. There was a very strong wind which
favoured West Ham in the first half.
Spurs opened the scoring after eight minutes when Sheringham rose to head
home a Carr cross. Spurs should have increased their lead when Iversen was
one-on-one with Miklosko the West Ham goalkeeper but he shot wide.
West Ham equalised in the twenty first minute. Hughes took a corner and
Iversen who was marking Dicks fell leaving the latter with a free header
from which he made no mistake. West Ham took the lead a minute later from
another Hughes corner. This time the wind caught hold of the ball before
Kitson headed home.
Spurs drew level in the twenty eighth minute. A Sheringham pass beat the
West ham defence and set up Anderton one-on-one with Miklosko. He cleverly
lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper into the net.
West Ham took the lead again seven minutes before half time. Dicks took a
free kick and Hartson who was making his home debut beat Campbell in the
air to head home.
Eight minutes after the break Spurs were level again. Again Sheringham was
the architect setting up Howells who scored with a low side-footed shot.
Howells was lucky not to concede a penalty when he fouled Hartson in the
penalty area. When he fouled the same player a second time the penalty was
awarded and Dicks blasted the ball down the middle to score the winning
goal. Although Spurs never gave up they could not snatch another equaliser.
