Best Moments 2002-3 season - A Christmas win at Maine Road

Chris Fincham wrote:-

Difficult one Paul, there have been so many!(Ed: Spot the irony folks!)

I think the best moment has to be when I travelled up to Maine Rd on a wet miserable December night just before Christmas, expecting the worst.

I had travelled up with a Man City supporter (and his daughter who insisted on playing Avril Lavigne at full volume all the way up the M6) and, after parking the car in someone's front garden in exchange for a couple of quid, walking through the threatening Moss Side backstreets in silence for what seemed an eternity, we arrived at a crumbling inhospitable ground, and were seated in a temporary corner stand adjacent to the Spurs away section and given plastic Macs to keep away the infamous Manchester rain. What's more, we seemed to be surrounded by one eyed, myopic, homophobic home supporters everywhere shouting obscenities at every opportunity.

As things turned out, Spurs put in a tidy, if not spectacular away performance against a home side with, if anything at that time, a defence with more leaks than Wales! Spurs found lots of room on the pitch and after taking a little while to settle down, played some nice flowing football which had the home side on the back foot for long periods. I saw at first a rare Chris Perry goal, an even rarer Davies header at the far post near us and in between a typical Gus Poyet effort which reminded us of his better days in the past. Altogether an enjoyable evening and the trip back down the M6 was not so bad after all and an early Xmas present.
