This game last year was played in the week preceding Spurs dramatic 5-1 Worthington Cup win against Chelsea. The corresponding fixture of last year ended 1-1, and I criticised Glenn for "using the squad" on the basis that we were not good enough. This time we face the Toffees after an embarassing defeat at Southampton, and a poor Christmas, when once again, Glenn tried to use the squad, and in my view, failed dismally.
What Spurs desperately need is a settled side using a settled system, with deputies who can come in and fill the relevant position. Yes there is a need for variety sometimes, but not to the degree that we get with Glenn.
We also need some pace in the side. Unfortunately, Matthew Etherington is not likely to be fit enough, as he only made his come back for the Reserves last Monday night. Jonathan Blondel had a great game, by all accounts, but will he get a chance? I doubt it. Some would argue that the team that lost (surrendered) at St. Mary's, should be the ones who have to show the fight that gets results, and that will get us back on the road to success. I think that change is required, but do not expect to see it.
Everton have their own problems, having also got kicked out of the FA Cup in a bad way, losing to Third Division Shrewsbury. They have also lost the winning knack, as they have drawn their last four games. Goals have been hard to come by for the Blues, and they will miss Wayne Rooney this week. Spurs Odyssey was one of the first to report on the emergence of this young star, when he played for Everton at White Hart Lane in the Youth Cup semi-final last year. (Read the report here)
As a matter of interest, our next three fixtures are against fello Premiership teams already out of the FA Cup, with a trip to Villa Park, and a visit by Newcastle to follow this week's game.
What will happen then on Sunday? The bookies would probably favour a draw, and a 0-0 might be on the cards. I'll let my heart rule me, and go for a 2-0 to Spurs.
