It is ironic to report that in the corresponding fixture last season, when Spurs gave one of their best performances of the season in winning 4-0, two of the scorers were Les Ferdinand (who scored the 10,000th Premiership goal) and Sergei Rebrov, both of whom famously are no longer with the club, who have to manage without the injured Robbie Keane for a couple of weeks yet.
Gary Doherty will be once again playing beside Teddy Sheringham in a Spurs line-up unlikely to be changed from that against Sunderland, over two weeks ago. On the other side, Fulham will be fielding fourth and fifth choice centre backs, due to injuries to Goma and Knight, and the suspension of Andy Melville. Hence Jean Tigana is likely to partner Martin Djetou and Abdeslam Ouaddou, so maybe our boys will be able to make hay.
For Spurs, this is just the 31st competitive game of the season, which is currently in "stop-start" mode due to our embarrassing exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Southampton. Whereas Fulham will be playing their 45th such game, thanks to their success in the Inter-Toto cup and a run in the UEFA Cup, and of course due to their continuing involvement in the FA Cup, the next episode of which (also on Sky) is on Wednesday night at Turf Moor, where Spurs came to grief in the Worthington Cup earlier in the season.
Steed Malbranque is Fulham's top scorer with a total of 13 goals, 6 of which have been in the league. He has scored in Fulham's last 6 games, 2 of which have been in the FA Cup. Fulham have suddenly found their scoring feet in recent games, and have scored two spectacular long goals through Harley (against Villa), and Wome, who scored in the 3-0 game against West Brom.
So - will Fulham be saving themselves for the Burnley game, which does after all feature their best chance of a place in Europe next term (as the losing finalists in the FA Cup could qualify this year), or will they be keen to lift their place in the league to 12th with an away win?
Spurs have a great opportunity themselves to go sixth, if they win by two or more goals, and these two week rests are no good if we cannot take maximum advantage. Personally I will not be satisified with less than six points from this game and Saturday's game at Upton Park, before another enforced two week break from the glorious game. I'll go for 2-0 to Spurs!
