First - the team news:-
Spurs
Steffen Iversen could be in Tottenham's starting line-up against Southampton
on Saturday.
He has missed the last two games to see his brother who was hurt in a road
accident in Norway.
Darren Anderton, Gus Poyet and Steffen Freund are all improving rapidly in
their comebacks from knee injuries, as is Stephen Carr (hamstring), but none
is likely to feature.
Anthony Gardner is expected to shrug off a slight strain and Glenn Hoddle
will choose between Goran Bunjevcevic and Milenko Acimovic in midfield.
Southampton
Paul Jones looks set to keep his starting place for the trip to Tottenham
after impressing in Southampton's midweek draw with Chelsea.
Jones is expected to start ahead of new goalkeeper Antti Niemi, who will
continue on the bench.
Tahar El Khalej will return to the squad after serving a three-game ban, but
Jason Dodd is out with a back injury.
Claus Lundekvam is still out with a hamstring strain, so Michael Svensson
will again start in defence.
Spurs finished last season two places above the Saints, and five points ahead of them in the league. Here we are again, with a five point gap already! Strangely enough, Southampton were our opposition for our fourth game last season. We got our first win, and they went home without a goal or a point to their name. So far this year they have yet to win, but have drawn two of their opening fixtures. It has to be said that Gordon Strachan did a great job after his appointment early last season, when Southampton were looking like relegation fodder, and finished in mid-table comfort.
Strachan has had little, if any money to spend in the summer though, and his line-up will be very similar to that we faced last year, except of course, one Dean Richards will be playing for the opposition! If you check out the match report for last year's game (see the links above and below this item), you will see that Simon Davies had a starring role in that game. Richards was already being greeted as a "Yiddo" by the Spurs fans, as it was already known he would come to Spurs, just as soon as Saint's chairman Rupert Lowe got off his high horse about improper approaches and the like.
As I write, I still wait for final confirmation that Robbie Keane has signed for us from Leeds, and I live in hope that he may have some company from Spain in a late, late deal. It looks like Robbie will be introduced to us, but he cannot have beat the deadline to enable him to play, surely?
I expect Spurs to line up with much the same team as at Charlton. Maybe Acimovic will come in for Bunjevcevic. I also expect Spurs to win 2-0 to go clear at the top of the Premiership - at least until Sunday!
