Kaiser Chiefs History

This article was written in 2003

A brief history of Kaizer Chiefs (courtesy of www.kaizerchiefs.com website)

Kaizer Chiefs have been South Africa's best supported and most successful club over the last three decades but have not been able to win a league title for the last 10 years.

The AmaKhosi were the dominant force in SA soccer in the 1970s and 1980s and are now looking to return to past glories with an ambitious new team.

Chiefs meet Tottenham in Cape Town on Tuesday, July 29 having just returned from participating in the World Peace Cup in South Korea against clubs like French champions Lyon and Besiktas of Turkey.

Chiefs were formed in 1971 in a breakaway from Orlando Pirates, who have since become their arch rivals. The club was formed by Kaizer Motaung, who played professionally in America and is still their club chairman.

They are coached by the veteran Romania Ted Dumitru, who has just returned to the club, and have been active in the off-season transfer market, buying South African internationals Patrick Mayo and Jabulani Mendu and the Swazi striker Sibusiso Dlamini.

Chiefs recently won the Vodacom Challenge, an off-season tournament involving Pirates and two clubs from the Democratic Republic of Congo, FC St Eloi Lupopo and TP Mazembe Englebert.
