Remember when Spurs won three of their first four games of last season, and spent a day at the top of the Premiership table? Seems a long time ago, doesn't it? One of those beaten teams was Charlton, and it was a Simon Davies goal that beat them at The Valley, where we haven't played since. Both Gary Doherty and Dean Richards were in the Spurs side that played that day, although it was one of those occasions when "The Doc" was up front beside Teddy Sheringham. Spurs won, and they won deservedly, although the year before we had been well beaten on a day when we could have gone second in the league. Here we are hoping for a win (unlikely, I know) which could get us back into the top half of the table for the first time since August!
Charlton, of course have spent most of the season in the top half. They had a dodgy start, but then lifted themselves with 5 wins in 6 games in an unbeaten run of 7 games going into October, since when they have held 4th-7th place. Top goalscorer is Jason Euell with 6, but they do get goals from all over the park.Johansson looked threatening at Chelsea on Sunday, where Charlton held the hosts to a 1-0 victory, and that through a rather generous penalty. They are of course still coming to terms with the departure of Scott Parker (I had to mention it, didn't I?), and Graham Stuart had to leave the field early on Sunday, through illness. Luke Young has returned from injury and may face his old team. Paul Knonchesky is once again likely to play against us, as he did within days of being recalled from his loan deal at Christmas time.
Jermain Defoe always gets a hot reception at The Valley, due to his departure from them to West Ham, after Charlton had nurtured him as a youth player. Most Spurs fans will hope that "The Ginger Pele" - Gary Doherty - can return to defensive action, but whoever plays at the back, it is absolutely vital, surely, that the leaks are plugged here and now, otherwise Charlton, desperate for a win themselves, will exploit us in front of their exuberant crowd.
David Pleat says the spirit is good in the Spurs camp and they are set upon closing the 7 point gap that exists between these two sides. Spurs have yet to win a Premiership London Derby this season, and this will be the 6th attempt. They also have not drawn in 15 Premiership games having lost 8 and won 6 of their last 14, but won 4 of their last 6.
All runs are made to come to an end, and I think that the sequence without a draw will end, predicting a 1-1 result in this match.
