In both the 2000-1 and 2001-2 seasons, Spurs' last away fixture of the season was at the old Filbert Street stadium, and both times they lost. On 5th May 2001, Leicester ran out 4-2 winners with goals from Rowett, Sturridge, Guppy and Savage,of all people, with a last minute penalty. How he gloated over that goal, as he had been baited as usual by the away contingent.
A year later, Teddy Sheringham scored a penalty for Spurs, but Leicester acheived only their fifth Premiership win of their last relegation season, with goals by Dickov and Piper. Leicester's relegation had been assured, and by this time, Micky Adams was giving his youngsters some experience, in preparation for a one-season return, which was won with their home games being played at the new Walkers Stadium, which is only a stone's throw from the old ground.
Last week, Leicester's new stadium hosted a prestigious friendly between Brazil and Jamaica, and we must hope that this week's fixture is as entertaining, and enterprising as that one.
Leicester will feel hopeful, despite their recent poor record, and the drop to last but one in the league, ahead of only Wolves. Most of their squad will be available, including Les Ferdinand, who has already scored once against his old club, when we were beaten at Upton Park in March. No doubt "Sir" Les would be only too happy to repeat the gesture. Another ex-Spur on display will be Ian Walker, who travelled to Turkey with the England squad, whilst Ben Thatcher is likely to miss out due to a recent bout of pneumonia.
Spurs have a problem, as Anthony Gardner will miss this game through suspension, and Ledley King needs another week before returning to fitness. Simon Davies is also likely to be absent. Who will partner Dean Richards? My guess is that Goran Bunjevcevic is likely to get the vote ahead of Gary Doherty who played the ninety minutes in Wednesday night's reserve game. The Spurs team is likely to be otherwise unchanged from the side that beat Everton 3-0 two weeks ago to return to winning ways in the league.
A win is vital to both sides, and I do not expect a draw. I hope for a Spurs win, but suspect it will be by the odd goal.
