Last year's home game against Newcastle was played on a Wednesday evening, and stolen in the last minute by Jenas's strike. It was the start of a dismal period for Spurs, of 1 win in 7 games, largely due to the enforced absence of Robbie Keane who got injured in the first half-hour of the Newcastle game. Spurs failed to re-inforce their strike force in time, and Gary Doherty was one of our only two strikers for most of those games.
Strangely, I reported that Richards had a great game against Shearer and Bellamy, so perhaps Dean can reflect positively upon that rather than his recent struggle with form.
It's a couple of years since Spurs beat Newcastle, and that was at St. James' Park, so maybe we can put things to rights this week-end. We certainly do not want a repeat of the 4-0 defeat at their place before Christmas, when Robert scored a couple of dazzling goals, and
Shearer bagged 2 as well. Robert's first volley will be a contender for goal of the season.
Newcastle though are in great form, having beaten Real Mallorca on Thursday night 4-1 in their UEFA Cup First leg tie. They are unbeaten in 8 league matches, and unbeaten away since 9th November, when they lost 5-0 at Stamford Bridge. The "Toon's" only other away defeat was at the hands of Arsenal. Pools' punters must love this team, who have drawn 12 games this season, 9 of them away.
Dyer is doubtful for the visitors after last night's European tie, but Lee Bowyer will be available in an otherwise pretty full strength team, which will include Shearer and Bellamy. Simon Davies does not return to training till next Monday, so misses out again, but Kanoute and Ziege are available for selection, and David Pleat says that Jamie Redknapp may take some part. I hope to be at Spurs Lodge tomorrow (Saturday) and will look for any clues.
Spurs will have to sharpen up considerably after Tuesday night's defeat at The Riverside, and their best chance may be if Newcastle feel some after-effects of their match against Mallorca. My prediction is for a 2-2 draw.
